SAIC-GM-Wuling announced on October 28 that its Hongguang MINIEV has surpassed 2 million cumulative sales, according to NetEase Auto. The model has held the title of China's best-selling A00-class battery-electric vehicle (BEV) for 74 consecutive months and ranks first globally in cumulative sales among mini electric vehicles. It also tops the list of best-selling single-model battery-electric vehicles among Chinese brands.
From niche to mainstream
The Hongguang MINIEV launched in July 2020 with a starting price of 28,800 yuan (about $4,100, Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives). It created the country's mini EV segment, offering a cheap, compact option for urban commuters. Over six years, the model has evolved through five generations, including a four-door version introduced as the first four-door, four-seat A00-class BEV, and the latest fifth generation with extended range.
The company reports that 78% of owners customize their cars, from decals to interiors, turning the MINIEV into a canvas for personal expression. Wuling has also partnered with brands like Yili, Nai Long, and Wei Long for crossover promotions.
Standards and global reach
Wuling says the MINIEV family holds 2,148 global patents and has contributed to setting 2 international, 202 national, and 50 industry standards. The model is part of Wuling's broader mini EV lineup, which has sold over 3 million units worldwide. The MINIEV is now sold in more than ten markets, including Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Honduras.
The fifth-generation MINIEV features a four-door, four-seat layout with 793 mm of front-to-rear legroom, 20 storage compartments, and a maximum trunk capacity of 838 liters. It includes a 10.1-inch center display and four driving modes. Wuling's smart island manufacturing system, which uses an in-house EOAI large model, achieves 0.1-millimeter assembly precision and 99.5% quality detection accuracy.
The 2 million milestone underscores the MINIEV's role in popularizing electric mobility in China. Wuling says it will continue to focus on affordable, practical EVs for everyday use.
