SAIC-GM-Wuling announced on October 28 that its Hongguang Mini EV has surpassed 2 million cumulative sales in China, cementing its position as the best-selling single battery-electric model among Chinese brands. The compact city car has also led the domestic A00-class (mini) EV segment for 74 consecutive months and ranks first globally in cumulative sales of mini new-energy vehicles, according to the company.
From niche to mainstream
The Hongguang Mini EV launched in July 2020 with a starting price of 28,800 yuan (about $4,100), a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives. It created a new market for affordable electric runabouts, filling a gap for small, low-cost urban mobility. Over six years, the model has evolved through five generations, from the original two-door version to a four-door variant introduced in the fourth generation, which was the first four-door, four-seat A00-class EV. The fifth generation extends driving range and adds features like a 10.1-inch touchscreen and multiple cabin modes.
The model's popularity is reflected in strong customer engagement: 78% of owners have customized their cars, and the brand has partnered with IPs such as Yili milk and the cartoon character Loong to expand its appeal. The Hongguang Mini EV has become a social statement as much as a means of transport.
Setting standards and expanding overseas
SAIC-GM-Wuling says the Hongguang Mini EV is the core of its global runabout lineup, which has surpassed 3 million cumulative sales. The company highlights the model's technical foundation, including 2,148 global patents and participation in drafting international, national, and industry standards for mini EVs. It has also introduced five new standards for the segment, aiming to raise the technology bar for micro electric vehicles.
The car has been exported to more than ten markets, including Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Honduras, as part of Wuling's push to bring Chinese-made runabouts to global consumers. The company credits its Guangxi New Energy Vehicle Laboratory and its self-developed EOAI large model for enabling high manufacturing precision, with 0.1-millimeter assembly accuracy and 99.5% quality detection accuracy.
The 2 million sales milestone underscores the Hongguang Mini EV's role in popularizing electric mobility in China, according to the company. With continuous updates and a focus on affordability, Wuling aims to keep the model at the forefront of the mini EV segment as it expands globally.
