Geely Galaxy M8 filing shows large five-seat PHEV SUV with 251 km CLTC range

Geely's Galaxy M8, a large five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV, has appeared in China's MIIT filing, sharing dimensions with the six-seat M9 but offering more space and up to 251 km CLTC electric range.

Geely's Galaxy M8, a large plug-in hybrid SUV, has been spotted in the latest batch of new-vehicle filings with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), according to Gasgoo. The model shares its dimensions with the Galaxy M9 but switches to a five-seat layout, targeting buyers who want generous space and long electric range without a third row.

The M8 continues the Galaxy family design language, featuring a closed grille with a full-width star-dot light bar, an active air intake in the lower bumper, and a roof-mounted lidar. The side profile is boxy and upright, with conventional mechanical door handles. The rear end mirrors the M9, with a continuous taillight, a spoiler, and a high-mounted brake light.

Size and powertrain

The M8 measures 5,205 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm—identical to the M9. However, the five-seat layout is expected to provide more rear legroom and a larger trunk than the six-seat M9. Optional features include a gold badge, which hints at a possible Black Gold Edition, and 20-inch or 21-inch wheels in four styles.

Power comes from a plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 120 kW (about 163 hp) with electric motors. Buyers can choose between a single-motor rear-wheel-drive setup and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version. The battery is a 53.42 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack supplied by CATL. The two-wheel-drive variant offers a CLTC-rated electric range of 231 km, while the four-wheel-drive version reaches 251 km. For reference, CLTC figures are typically 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP, so real-world ranges would be roughly 196-213 km (est.). The claimed fuel consumption is about 5.75 L/100 km. Curb weights are 2,470 kg for the two-wheel-drive and 2,620 kg for the four-wheel-drive version.

Market positioning

In the large plug-in hybrid SUV segment, five-seat options are common, but the M8's combination of M9-level dimensions and a 53.42 kWh battery gives it a competitive edge in space and electric range. Its market success will largely depend on the pricing and configuration strategy when it officially launches, Gasgoo notes.
