Geely has filed its upcoming Galaxy M8 large SUV with Chinese regulators, according to NetEase Auto. The new model, part of Geely's Galaxy series, adopts a five-seat layout to focus on rear-seat comfort for families, while retaining the dimensions and exterior design of the already-launched Galaxy M9.
Design and Dimensions
The Galaxy M8 measures 5,205 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,800 mm tall, with a 3,030 mm wheelbase - identical to the M9. The exterior features the brand's signature "Star River Ripple" LED light bar with 380 micro-LEDs, matrix adaptive headlights with anti-glare and cornering functions, and an active grille that reduces drag. The roof-mounted lidar is integrated into the body for improved aerodynamics.
Inside, the M8 drops the third row to maximize space for the second row, offering a "large five-seat" configuration that the company says provides a class-leading rear-seat experience. The filing also lists options such as a gold badge, a "Black Gold" special edition, 20- and 21-inch wheels in four designs, two-tone roofs and privacy glass.
Powertrain and Range
The M8 is powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine producing 120 kW (161 hp). It uses a 53.42 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery from CATL, available in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions. The two-wheel-drive model offers a WLTC pure-electric range of 231 km, while the four-wheel-drive version achieves 251 km, with kerb weights of 2,470 kg and 2,620 kg respectively. This range covers most daily commuting on electric power alone, according to the report.
For driver assistance, the M8 includes a roof lidar and is expected to feature Geely's Qianli Haohan system, supporting highway and city NOA (navigate on autopilot) functions for highways and urban roads.
The filing follows a trend of large five-seat SUVs in China, where plug-in hybrids are popular among families. With its 5.2-metre length, 3.0-metre wheelbase, over 230 km of electric range and advanced driver-assist hardware, the Galaxy M8 targets buyers prioritizing rear-seat space and family-oriented features, according to NetEase Auto.
