Ford has launched the updated Edge L in China, a seven-seat SUV that has been a mainstay of the brand's local lineup since 2006. The new model is priced from 229,800 to 299,800 yuan (about $32,400 to $42,300) as a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives, according to NetEase Auto. Six trim levels are available, with the company also rolling out a package of purchase benefits.
Design and powertrain upgrades
The Edge L, designed by Ford's China design center, gets a more imposing front end with a squared-off grille and a full-width LED tail light bar with an illuminated "EDGE" badge. New colors include Huangdao Gold and Nebula Blue, the latter developed specifically for the Chinese market. Inside, the cabin features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 27-inch panoramic display, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip that is standard across the range. The SYNC Max infotainment system supports voice control, Apple CarPlay, and in-car karaoke, with a B&O sound system.
Under the hood, the Edge L is available with a 2.0-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain that combines a 202 kW (271 hp) engine with a 140 kW (188 hp) electric motor, delivering a combined 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time of 7.1 seconds. The system is mated to a 75-liter fuel tank and can run on 92-octane gasoline, with WLTC fuel consumption as low as 6 liters per 100 km. Ford claims a driving range of nearly 1,200 km (746 miles) on a full tank. All-wheel-drive versions use a mechanical system with torque distribution from 0-100% between front and rear axles, offering five drive modes including wet and rough-road settings.
Comfort and safety features
Ford emphasizes the Edge L's "American big sofa" seating, with second-row captain's chairs featuring leg rests, a 190 mm slide, and multiple adjustment modes. The cabin offers either 2-2-3 or 2-3-2 seating arrangements, with a 200 mm central aisle in the former for easy access to the third row. With all seven seats occupied, the trunk holds 309 liters, expanding to 969 liters with the third row folded. The body uses a cage structure with over 50% ultra-high-strength steel, and the roof can withstand the weight of five vehicles. Standard safety equipment includes Ford Co-Pilot 360 Level 2 driver assistance with 12 functions and a 540-degree camera system.
The Edge L has been a key player in China's family SUV segment, competing with models like the Toyota Highlander and Buick Enclave. Ford has positioned the new Edge L as a "family travel companion," targeting buyers who want a spacious, comfortable, and reliable vehicle for long-distance trips. The hybrid system addresses common concerns about fuel economy and range anxiety, while the mechanical all-wheel drive provides capability on rough roads. The updated model also benefits from Ford's local manufacturing and testing, including extensive durability validation and battery safety tests. The Edge L is produced at Changan Ford's plant in Chongqing, a joint venture between Ford and Changan Automobile.
