FAW Besturn launches Xiaoma five-door BEV from 39,900 yuan

FAW Besturn's Xiaoma five-door electric minicar is now on sale in China, priced from 44,900 to 54,900 yuan before a 5,000-yuan cash discount, with CATL batteries and up to 328 km CLTC range.

FAW Besturn has launched the five-door version of its Xiaoma electric minicar, a model aimed at young families and urban commuters. The new variant is available in four trims with two range options, and the company says it is the first A00-segment car in China to meet the latest national safety standards for five-door body styles.

Pricing and positioning

The Xiaoma five-door carries a Chinese guide price of 44,900 to 54,900 yuan (about $6,300 to $7,700) before taxes and incentives. Buyers can take advantage of a 5,000-yuan cash discount, bringing the limited-time price down to 39,900 to 49,900 yuan (about $5,600 to $7,000). FAW Besturn is also offering a 36-month zero-interest finance plan and a six-part after-sales package that includes lifetime warranty on the vehicle and its battery pack.

The launch event, held on October 28, was styled as a gathering of "Xiaoma fans," with comedian Kuku de Xi appearing as a product experience officer and FAW Besturn chairman Liu Zhongchen presenting prizes to winners of a naming contest. The company says the Xiaoma nameplate has already attracted 300,000 owners in China, and the five-door version is being positioned as a more practical choice for parents who need to shuttle children or run errands around town.

Battery, safety and range

All versions of the Xiaoma five-door are equipped with batteries from CATL, the world's largest EV battery maker. The entry-level model offers a CLTC range of 222 km, while the top trim reaches 328 km on the CLTC cycle (approximately 263-279 km on the more realistic WLTP test, estimated). FAW Besturn claims the 328 km version can actually achieve 360 km in real-world driving, and that fast charging can replenish the battery from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes.

Safety is a key selling point. The car uses 63% high-strength steel and a 2,200 MPa submarine-grade steel anti-collision beam, and comes standard with dual airbags, ESC stability control and wider tires. The company says the Xiaoma can wade through 300 mm of water, which should give novice drivers more confidence in rainy conditions.

Inside, the five-door layout adds convenience: a flat-folding rear seat creates a 1-by-1-meter child bed, there are 25 storage spaces, and the front seats recline to 170 degrees. The infotainment system includes a voice assistant powered by a large language model that can generate original stories for children, plus an external speaker for communicating with people outside the car.

The Xiaoma five-door is now on sale at dealerships across China, with overseas deliveries also beginning. According to the Chinese automotive outlet 电动邦 (DianDongBang), the model is part of FAW's broader push to expand its electric vehicle lineup under the Besturn brand.
