Chery Launches Fifth-Generation Tiggo 8 in China from 89,900 Yuan

Chery's fifth-generation Tiggo 8 hits the Chinese market with a starting price of 89,900 yuan after discounts, offering a 1.6T engine, 2,825mm wheelbase, and a 15.6-inch screen with a Snapdragon 8155 chip.

Chery has launched the fifth-generation Tiggo 8 in China, a mid-size SUV priced to undercut much of the crowded 100,000-yuan segment. The official guide price ranges from 99,900 to 129,900 yuan (about $14,100 to $18,300), but with launch discounts the entry version starts at 89,900 yuan (about $12,700). All prices are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives, according to NetEase Auto.

The new Tiggo 8 is offered with two front-end designs: a "Tiger" version with a tooth-edge dot-matrix grille for a more conservative look, and a "Leopard" version with a sharper grille aimed at younger families. Both share the same body, which measures 4,749mm in length and has a 2,825mm wheelbase, placing it firmly in the mid-size SUV class.

Powertrain and Efficiency

Under the hood, the Tiggo 8 uses Chery's Kunpeng 1.6T turbocharged engine, producing 147kW (about 197hp) and 310Nm of torque. The engine runs on regular 92-octane petrol, keeping running costs down. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The official WLTC fuel consumption is 7.2 litres per 100km, and with a 51-litre tank, the claimed range is around 700km. For a daily commute of 35km, that translates to refuelling roughly every 20 days, with fuel costs of about 0.5 yuan per kilometre.

The Tiggo 8's powertrain has competition pedigree, as the model family has competed in the Taklimakan Rally, according to the report. The interior offers a 15.6-inch 2.5K central touchscreen (on the Tiger version) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, which is rare in a petrol car at this price point. The system boots in 2 seconds, can process over 20 voice commands in 30 seconds, and supports four-zone voice recognition, multi-dialect understanding, and wireless connectivity for Huawei HiCar, Apple CarPlay, and Android phones. A 50W wireless charger is standard.

Space, Safety, and Comfort

Passenger space is generous, with rear legroom of up to 970mm and a claimed 84% space efficiency. The front seats include a 170-degree reclining "beach chair" for the driver and a passenger seat with 10-layer cushioning, pneumatic massage, ventilation, and an electric leg rest. The boot has a two-level design with a maximum volume of 1,453 litres, and the rear seats fold completely flat to create a 3.3-square-metre sleeping area.

Safety is a highlight: the Tiggo 8 has earned a five-star Euro NCAP rating, and the body uses high-strength steel and aluminium accounting for 80% of the structure, with 1,500MPa ultra-high-strength steel in key areas. Up to eight airbags are available, including a far-side airbag (to prevent front passengers from colliding with each other) and knee airbags, features rarely seen even in 200,000-yuan vehicles. The chassis uses hydraulic isolation for the front control arms and engine, plus aluminium steering knuckles, contributing to a claimed moose test speed of 81km/h.

The cabin also includes an active fragrance system certified to IFRA standards, an oxygen-enrichment function for high-altitude driving, and an air purification system with AQS detection, negative ion generation, and a PM0.3 filter. Chery targets families with a budget around 100,000 yuan who want space, power, and modern tech in a petrol SUV. The fifth-generation Tiggo 8 is now available at dealers across China, with launch-period benefits including purchase funds and trade-in subsidies.
