Changan Hunter K70 EREV pickup launches in China from 192,900 yuan

Changan has launched the Hunter K70, billed as the world's first range-extender off-road pickup, with prices starting at 192,900 yuan (about $27,200). The model offers a 150 km NEDC electric range and a combined range of 897 km.

Changan has launched the Hunter K70, which it calls the world's first range-extender (EREV) off-road pickup, in China. The new model is available in two configurations, the standard-box four-wheel-drive large-battery Leading and Flagship trims, priced at 192,900 yuan and 207,900 yuan respectively (about $27,200 and $29,300). These are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives. Buyers also get an 8,000 yuan cash discount, a 10,000 yuan trade-in subsidy, a lifetime warranty on the battery, motor and EREV system, and a free 7 kW home charger, according to D1EV.

The Hunter K70 is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts and off-road adventurers, addressing what Changan describes as the industry pain point of "vehicles that can supply power can't go far, and vehicles that go far can't supply power." The pickup combines long range with 30 kW of external power discharge, strong performance and high off-road capability, offering a "can go wild, can power" all-scenario solution.

Off-road capability and powertrain

The Hunter K70 features a cargo box measuring 1,600 by 1,595 by 500 mm, with a 1,276-liter volume, and a tailgate with a folding step for easy loading. It has approach and departure angles of 38 and 28 degrees, a minimum ground clearance of 245 mm, and a wading depth of 650 mm, fitted with LT285/70 R17 all-terrain tires.

Power comes from dual electric motors with a combined peak output of 260 kW (about 349 hp) and peak torque of 559 N·m. The pickup uses a two-speed electric drive axle, with a low-speed four-wheel-drive ratio that multiplies wheel-end torque by three times. It offers 10 driving modes, including off-road settings for mountain, sand, snow, mud and water, plus an off-road assistance system that displays altitude, coordinates, body angle and differential lock status.

The Hunter K70 is powered by a 43.47 kWh battery from CATL, with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine acting as a range extender. It has a claimed NEDC electric-only range of 150 km and a combined range of 897 km. On a full tank and charge, the vehicle can store up to 239 kWh of energy, enough to support a four-vehicle convoy for about six nights of camping, according to Changan. The battery features five layers of protection, including a cage-style anti-collision structure, thermal management, zero thermal propagation, a high-strength steel case and IP68 sealing.

Power discharge and camper version

The Hunter K70 offers what Changan claims is an industry-first 30 kW external power discharge, plus a 3.3 kW dual 220V outlet panel inside the cargo box, allowing simultaneous use of high-power tools and low-power appliances. The pickup also features a non-load-bearing frame, six airbags, and automatic door unlocking and fuel cutoff in a collision.

Changan also launched the Hunter K70 Feizhu camper version, priced at 249,800 yuan (about $35,200). It includes an aluminum camper shell with a 2m by 1.7m push-out bed and a 1.6m by 0.6m fold-down bed, sleeping three to four people, plus a foldable table, sink, 70-liter fresh water tank and shower kit.
