Xpeng started nationwide deliveries of the G9L on Sept. 22 with a ceremony that had a personal touch: Wang Fengying, president of Xpeng Group, volunteered to hand the first keys to customers herself. According to Chinese auto portal PCauto, it was Wang's first customer handover. She gave each buyer the keys, posed for photographs, handed out small gifts and watched every G9L drive off the lot.
The G9L is the latest model in Xpeng's push into family-oriented electric vehicles. Described as a battery-electric (BEV) five-seat technology flagship, it launched with a limited-time price starting at 231,800 yuan (about $32,650; Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives). PCauto said the model drew strong attention from households almost immediately after it went on sale.
The first batch of owners skews young and professional. PCauto said many are post-90s entrepreneurs, corporate managers and social-media creators, and a large number are going through marriage, parenthood and career transitions. At the handover, several owners said they had compared models from AITO, Li Auto, Xiaomi, Tesla and Zeekr before choosing the G9L.
Their decision criteria were consistent: cabin space, comfort, intelligent features, safety and driving feel. Most owners told the outlet that Xpeng's ADAS (advanced driver-assistance system) belongs in the first tier of Chinese assisted-driving technology. Many also cited the G9L's driving quality and the amount of cabin and storage space, which they treated as essential for a family car.
Owners return for another Xpeng
One post-95 owner, married this year, said the G9L matched his high expectations for space and comfort, describing it as a partner that works for both personal enjoyment and family life. Xpeng also saw strong repurchase activity: existing owners of the GX and G9 have moved up to the G9L, and some buyers already own three Xpeng models - the X9, the GX and the G9L.
That pattern of returning customers matters for Xpeng as it tries to broaden beyond its early base of tech-minded EV buyers. The G9L is aimed squarely at families, which could bring in a wider audience while keeping the brand's existing supporters.
From Guangzhou to Graz
The G9L is also a global vehicle, PCauto said. Xpeng is speeding up its overseas rollout, with a worldwide launch event scheduled for Oct. 12 in Paris, France. The model will be built globally, with manufacturing starting in parallel at Xpeng's Guangzhou plant in China and at a plant in Graz, Austria.
With the first deliveries complete, the G9L is expected to open up new scenarios for family users and strengthen Xpeng's position in the five-seat electric SUV segment. The Paris event will be the next test of whether that family-oriented positioning can work beyond China.
