Wey, the premium brand of Great Wall Motors (GWM), launched the Gaoshan 8 HEV on October 26 - a "smart luxury four-wheel-drive MPV" that runs on petrol and never needs a charging plug. The model opens at limited-time prices of 259,800 yuan (about $36,600) for the Shuxiang trim and 279,800 yuan (about $39,400) for the Zhenxiang version, according to Chinese EV outlet DianDongBang. The figures are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives; Wey adds a 6,000-yuan purchase-tax subsidy and up to 10,000 yuan in brand-loyalty benefits as part of ten launch offers.
The Gaoshan 8 HEV (a non-plug-in hybrid) targets China's blue-plate buyers - households driving conventional fuel vehicles that carry a blue licence plate rather than the green plate reserved for new-energy models. DianDongBang says such owners do not want to be tied to charging piles, but should not have to sacrifice intelligence, performance or comfort to avoid them. The answer is a hybrid whose 3.64 kWh battery recharges from the engine and braking rather than a wall socket, yet sits at the heart of an ambitious electronics package.
Lidar and free NOA
According to DianDongBang, the Gaoshan 8 HEV is the only non-plug-in hybrid MPV in its segment with a lidar as standard. One 192-line lidar joins 27 perception sensors, an Orin-Y domain controller and the Coffee Pilot 3 assistance suite to enable urban NOA (city advanced driver assistance), highway NOA, parking-space-to-parking-space navigation and more than 200 parking scenarios. City and highway NOA are free for life for the first owner - no hardware pre-payment, no software subscription.
Wey pairs the electronics with a 2.0-litre turbo hybrid engine and a four-speed Hi4 intelligent all-wheel-drive system, delivering 322 kW (about 432 hp) and 782 N·m of torque. The claimed 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time is 5.9 seconds and WLTC fuel consumption is 6.92 L/100 km (about 34 mpg US). Four-wheel drive is standard on both trims, with no optional charge. Hi4 shifts torque between the axles across a 0:100 to 100:0 split in milliseconds and actively reduces motor torque to prevent wheelspin in rain or snow. An aluminium suspension, a rear five-link layout and a 5.7-metre turning radius help the large MPV feel manageable on narrow roads.
The small battery is the largest in its class, says Wey, and it powers a standard 220V/2.2 kW exterior socket in the boot. Camping hotpots, outdoor office work or roadside presentations can draw power while parked or driving - again, with no charger involved.
Cabin comfort and warranty terms
Inside are second- and third-row rails spanning 1,930 mm and a flat floor that leaves enough space for a 1.2-metre child to walk through the cabin. The second row gets dual zero-gravity seats with 12-point massage, ventilation and heating; the third row is also ventilated and heated. A 12.5-litre temperature-controlled fridge, a 17.3-inch rear entertainment screen, 23 speakers and twin folding tables come as standard, and the sliding doors open to 0.8 metres wide and 1.35 metres high for easy entry.
On safety, Wey quotes a body with at least 80.34% high-strength steel, peaks of 2,000 MPa and a 3,107-mm side curtain airbag. First non-commercial owners receive lifetime warranties covering the three-electric system (battery, motor and electronics), the engine and the gearbox, with the whole vehicle covered for six years or 150,000 km. Pre-order customers also get lifetime free basic maintenance, lifetime OTA updates and free basic data traffic.
Wey argues the running costs add up as well. Because the 2.0-litre engine meets China's national scrappage-and-trade-in rules, scrapping an old car brings a 15,000-yuan (about $2,110) subsidy and selling one brings 13,000 yuan (about $1,830), stacking on top of the purchase-tax support and putting the effective entry price below 250,000 yuan. For buyers who cannot charge at home, travel long distances and insist on refuelling like a conventional car, the Gaoshan 8 HEV asks nothing new of them - it just puts lidar, city navigation, intelligent four-wheel drive, external power and lifetime warranties into a blue-plate MPV, closing the chapter on what used to be a compromise purchase.
