Volkswagen's Anhui joint venture has begun pre-sales for its first electric fastback, the ID. UNYX 09, with prices starting at 199,900 yuan (about $28,150) and rising to 249,900 yuan (about $35,200). The model, which entered production at the Hefei plant on September 24, marks the brand's expansion from SUVs into the fastback segment, according to Chinese outlet 电动邦 (Dian Dong Bang).
Design and interior
The ID. UNYX 09 measures 5,081 mm in length with a 3,030 mm wheelbase and 1,980 mm width, giving it a wide, low stance. Its fastback roofline and extended hood create a sporty silhouette. The car features 422 individually controllable LED units that form an interactive light display, with custom welcome animations. The rear features a wolf-head emblem, part of the brand's 'wolf family' design language.
Inside, the cabin offers a horizontal design theme with three color options, including a unique 'misty purple' shade. Buyers can choose between Nappa leather and eco-friendly PU materials. A 1.74-square-meter panoramic roof with smart dimming blocks over 99.99% of UV rays.
Technology and performance
The ID. UNYX 09 is equipped with a DLP digital projection headlight that can project driving information onto the road, such as lane-change guidance and collision warnings. An 85-inch equivalent AR-HUD displays navigation over a three-lane view with 12,000 nits brightness and less than 1% distortion. The system can also show driver-assist intentions when the navigation on autopilot (NOA) is active.
The vehicle uses an end-to-end driver-assist system based on a VLA large model, powered by a Turing AI chip with 750 TOPS of computing power and 26 sensors. It supports highway and city NOA (advanced driver assistance), plus a 'parking-to-parking' function that can memorize frequently used routes, including entering gated communities and parking.
Under the skin, the ID. UNYX 09 features a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear all-aluminum suspension, with optional dual-chamber air springs from Vibracoustic and ZF's DCC dynamic damping. The air suspension offers 100 mm of travel and has passed 4.5 million durability cycles. Brembo four-piston brake calipers are standard.
The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Range figures (CLTC) are 755 km for the rear-drive version with a 92 kWh battery, 705 km for the AWD version, and about 600 km for the 70 kWh variant. Note that CLTC estimates are typically 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP, so real-world range will be lower.
Charging and quality
The ID. UNYX 09 is Volkswagen's first model with 5C ultra-fast charging, built on an 800V silicon carbide platform with CATL cells. Peak charging power exceeds 520 kW, allowing about 500 km of range in 10 minutes and a 10-80% charge in under 12 minutes.
Volkswagen claims the car has undergone 3.5 million kilometers of testing in extreme conditions, from -40°C to 47°C, and has passed over 140 full-vehicle safety tests. The battery underbody can withstand about 1,300 J of impact, and a smart fuse cuts high-voltage power within 5 milliseconds in a collision. The body uses a cavity wax injection process for corrosion resistance, with a '3-year no rust, 12-year no perforation' standard.
The ID. UNYX 09 is the result of collaboration between Volkswagen and Xpeng, developed at Volkswagen's largest R&D center outside Germany. It joins the ID. UNYX 06, 07, and 08 in the brand's lineup. Volkswagen Anhui plans to expand its sales network to 200 outlets by the end of 2026, using a mix of direct sales and agency models.
