Volkswagen unveils China-developed VEGA tech matrix, targets global expansion

Volkswagen Group China launched VEGA, a locally developed technology matrix covering platforms, E/E architecture, and ADAS, and announced plans to export these technologies to emerging markets.

Volkswagen Group China has unveiled VEGA, an integrated technology matrix developed entirely in China, marking a strategic shift from "In China, For China" to "In China, Beyond China." The announcement was made at the automaker's first technology day on October 28, according to PCauto.

VEGA comprises a vehicle platform, an electrical/electronic (E/E) architecture, and an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). Volkswagen claims it is the only foreign automaker in China with such a locally developed matrix. The company plans to use this technology to expand into emerging markets, localizing its CMP platform and CEA architecture in target regions.

Platform and architecture details

The CMP platform targets A-segment vehicles and supports both battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models. The CSP platform is designed for full-size and flagship vehicles, supporting BEV and range-extender (EREV) powertrains. CMP models achieve a CLTC range of over 600 kilometers (about 373 miles), with the best version consuming around 11 kWh per 100 kilometers. CSP BEV models target a range exceeding 800 kilometers (497 miles) on CLTC, while EREV versions promise a combined range of over 1,500 kilometers (932 miles).

The CEA architecture, which Volkswagen says is the only self-developed E/E architecture among foreign automakers in China, will be fitted to five Volkswagen BEV models in 2026, including the ID. ERA 5X and ID. AURA L5. It will expand to PHEV and combustion models in 2027, with a major upgrade that integrates cockpit and intelligent driving computing, preparing for Level 3 autonomous driving and AI agent integration. The 2029 CEA 3.0 aims to support full-domain AI agents and Level 4 development.

ADAS and global rollout

Volkswagen's local ADAS solution, Hyper Sense 8 (HS8), developed with CARIZON—a joint venture between CARIAD and Horizon Robotics—supports highway and city NOA (navigation on autopilot) and automated parking. It will debut on seven electric models across three joint ventures in 2026.

The company also introduced GAIA 2.0, a simulation world model for intelligent driving that can perform the equivalent of 5 million kilometers of simulation tests daily, using 30 million real-world driving clips. Volkswagen targets Level 3 readiness by 2027 and has already obtained a Level 3 road-test license in Hefei.

Volkswagen's export strategy includes shipping locally produced vehicles to the Middle East, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and sub-Saharan Africa, with Mexico, Egypt, and Vietnam added by the end of 2026. The CMP platform and CEA architecture will be offered to global southern markets, with South America expected to adopt the technology by 2030.
