Volkswagen's Anhui joint venture delivered 1,761 vehicles in September, a 35.2% increase from the previous month, according to Sina Auto. The brand, which builds electric cars for the Chinese market under the ID. UNYX sub-brand, is preparing a busy October with two refreshed models and a new flagship SUV.
Three models on sale, two more coming
The company currently sells three models under the ID. UNYX lineup: the 06, 07, and 08. In October, it will launch refreshed versions of the 06 and 07, along with the all-new ID. UNYX 09, which will become the range-topping model. The 09 is expected to be a large electric SUV, positioned above the existing models.
The September sales figure marks a rebound for the brand, which has been ramping up production at its plant in Hefei, Anhui province. The joint venture, owned equally by Volkswagen and its Chinese partner JAC, is part of the German automaker's strategy to accelerate its electric-vehicle push in China.
Context and outlook
Volkswagen Anhui is a key pillar of the group's "in China, for China" strategy, focusing on smart, connected EVs tailored to local tastes. The ID. UNYX models are BEVs (battery-electric vehicles) built on Volkswagen's MEB platform, adapted with local software and design.
The October launch wave is expected to boost deliveries further, though the brand still trails domestic rivals like BYD and Nio in volume. Analysts see the ID. UNYX 09 as a critical test of Volkswagen's ability to compete in China's fiercely contested electric-SUV segment.
The Hefei plant, which began production in 2023, has an annual capacity of 350,000 vehicles and is designed to be a hub for electric-vehicle development and manufacturing. Volkswagen has invested heavily in the site, including a new battery assembly line and a software subsidiary.
With the refreshed 06 and 07 and the new 09, Volkswagen Anhui aims to strengthen its position in the market. The company has not yet announced pricing for the new models, but the current ID. UNYX lineup starts at around 189,800 yuan (about $26,700) for the 06, a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives.
