Tank 300 Huck Road launch: GWM brings solid axles to a factory-built off-roader

GWM's Tank brand launched the Tank 300 Huck Road, a limited-edition off-roader with front and rear solid axles, 2-inch lift, and a 25万元 price tag, targeting hardcore rock-crawling enthusiasts.

Great Wall Motor's Tank brand has expanded its 300 family with a new hardcore off-road variant. The Tank 300 Huck Road, launched on September 20, is priced at 250,000 yuan (about $35,200) as a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives, with only 300 units available in the initial run. The model is named after a famous off-road route in the Helan Mountains and brings components typically found in modified off-roaders—front and rear solid axles, a factory 2-inch lift, widened track, and a raised snorkel—into a production vehicle with full warranty coverage.

According to 电动邦 (DianDongBang), the Huck Road is designed for extreme rock crawling, a niche that has long been dominated by imported models or heavily modified domestic vehicles. The solid-axle setup offers superior torque handling and impact resistance, but it also brings trade-offs like a stiffer ride and reduced high-speed stability. By offering these features from the factory, Tank aims to give enthusiasts a complete off-road package without the reliability and warranty concerns of aftermarket modifications.

Specs and capability

The Tank 300 Huck Road is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 170 kW (228 hp) and 400 Nm of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It features a 4.55 final drive ratio and a first-gear ratio of 5.288, giving a crawl ratio of 63.5—a figure that indicates strong low-speed torque multiplication, useful for climbing steep rocks. The vehicle boasts a 41-degree approach angle, 34-degree departure angle, 245 mm of ground clearance, and a maximum wading depth of 850 mm.

The suspension system has been stiffened by 38%, with an 80 mm front axle tube and 42 mm solid tie rods. The rear trailing arms and Panhard rod bushings have been enlarged to 58 mm. These upgrades aim to reduce deformation during impacts and minimize chassis looseness over time. The model also includes a semi-active anti-roll bar that can be electronically disconnected at the touch of a button for off-road use, and it supports 35-inch tires without modification.

Positioning and market impact

The limited production run and pricing suggest Tank is not targeting high volume but rather establishing a technical benchmark. The Huck Road comes with 3,000 yuan in modification funds, a 12,000-yuan semi-active anti-roll bar, exclusive decals, and a yellow paint option. It also includes a five-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, five years of free roadside assistance, and up to ten free maintenance services.

This launch fills a gap in Tank's lineup, which already includes the Hi4-T and Hi4-Z hybrid versions and a 2.4T diesel. The Huck Road extends the range into the professional rock-crawling segment, offering a factory solution that balances extreme capability with daily usability. With nearly 600,000 Tank 300 owners, the brand sees this as a way to showcase its engineering prowess and attract hardcore enthusiasts.
