SAIC Volkswagen has begun accepting orders for the ID. ERA 8X, the third model in its ID. ERA family, positioning the large five-seat SUV as a flagship for driving dynamics and family comfort. According to NetEase Auto, the model enters the 250,000 yuan (about $35,200) segment for range-extender SUVs, a category that has grown rapidly in China as buyers seek the convenience of electric driving without range anxiety.
Full standard equipment from base trim
The ID. ERA 8X is offered in four trims: Pro, Max, Max long-range, and Ultra long-range. Even the entry-level Pro comes with a long list of features, including a 192-line LiDAR, a Momenta R7 world model for assisted driving, 800V fast charging, a 15.6-inch dual screen, a W-HUD head-up display, a 12-liter dual-door smart refrigerator, Nappa leather seats with heating, ventilation and massage for the front row, and nine airbags. The Max trim adds intelligent all-wheel drive, dual-chamber air suspension, and electrically operated doors. The long-range versions are equipped with a 65.2 kWh CATL battery, delivering a CLTC pure-electric range of 451 km (about 362 km WLTP est.) and a combined range of 1,602 km (about 1,282 km WLTP est.).
The vehicle is powered by Volkswagen's EA211 range extender, which the company says has been developed over 15 years and has seen global installations of more than 25 million units. The extender achieves a maximum thermal efficiency of 43% and allows the ID. ERA 8X to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in as little as 4.6 seconds. In real-world testing, the company claims a fuel consumption of 5.85 liters per 100 km when the battery is depleted, and the engine runs on 92-octane petrol. The 800V architecture enables a 10% to 80% charge in 16 minutes, and the vehicle supports 3.5 kW of external power discharge for camping or tailgating.
Assisted driving and comfort features
The ID. ERA 8X is the first model to feature a parking-to-parking (D2D) navigation function, which seamlessly connects driving and parking from the departure parking spot to the destination spot, including passing through toll booths. The Momenta R7 world model, which processes data from 26 sensors, is designed to handle 29 driving scenarios, such as yielding in narrow lanes, three-point turns, and navigating roundabouts. The system improves safety in lane changes and avoidance maneuvers by 3 to 5 times, and increases lane-change efficiency by nearly 15 times, according to SAIC Volkswagen. Existing ID. ERA 9X owners will receive the R7 world model via an over-the-air update starting September 28.
The interior features a 270-degree wraparound cabin with a 5,020 mm (197.6 in) length and a 2,970 mm (116.9 in) wheelbase, providing ample space for five occupants. The rear seats can recline up to 133 degrees, and the right rear seat has an electric leg rest. The Smart Surface door panel display allows rear passengers to adjust seat and temperature settings by reaching out, and it can also warn of approaching vehicles when opening the door. The 12-liter refrigerator can hold eight 550 ml bottles and is accessible from both front and rear.
SAIC Volkswagen emphasized the vehicle's testing credentials, noting that it completed over 1 million kilometers of road testing and an additional 500,000 kilometers of durability testing, including extreme heat and cold conditions. The company also addressed skepticism about a promotional video showing the ID. ERA 8X drifting in Xinjiang, stating that the footage was genuine and not AI-generated. The ID. ERA 8X will officially launch on October 12, with final pricing to be announced then.
