SAIC Volkswagen has opened nationwide orders for its new ID. ERA 8X, a large five-seat range-extender SUV positioned in the mainstream 250,000 yuan (about $35,200) segment. The model completes the automaker's ID. ERA family, which now spans from the mid-size 5S to the flagship 9X, creating what the company calls a "dual-flagship" strategy for the Chinese market.
The ID. ERA 8X is built on SAIC Volkswagen's EV architecture and features four core technologies: the Xingyun intelligent driving system, a "golden" range-extender powertrain, an intelligent chassis, and the Yunqi smart cockpit. It launches in four trims - Pro, Max, Max Long Range, and Ultra Long Range - all equipped with a full suite of standard features, a departure from the industry norm of stripping down entry versions.
Smart driving as the key differentiator
The most distinctive selling point is its driver-assistance package. Every ID. ERA 8X comes with the new Momenta R7 world model, which shifts the system from passive perception to active prediction, according to the automaker. The hardware suite includes a 192-line lidar, millimeter-wave radar, and high-definition cameras - 26 perception sensors in total - enabling the system to handle 29 high-frequency scenarios such as narrow-road passing, three-point turns, roundabouts, and tight-lane avoidance.
The car also debuts a "door-to-door" navigation feature that seamlessly links parking and driving from the departure spot to the destination, even handling toll gates and complex intersections. SAIC Volkswagen claims the system improves safety in static-obstacle avoidance by nearly 10 times, boosts safety metrics in lane-changing and traffic-flow scenarios by 3-5 times, and enhances lane-change efficiency by nearly 15 times.
On the powertrain side, the ID. ERA 8X uses the third-generation EA211 range extender, which the company says has been installed in over 25 million vehicles globally. It features variable-geometry turbocharging and 350-bar direct injection, achieving a thermal efficiency of 43%. The SUV accelerates from 0-100 km/h in as little as 4.6 seconds and has a measured fuel consumption of 5.85 L/100 km when the battery is depleted, running on regular 92-octane gasoline.
The Max Long Range version packs a 65.2 kWh CATL battery, offering a CLTC pure-electric range of 451 km (WLTP est. ~360-385 km) and a combined range of 1,602 km. All versions come with 800V fast charging, replenishing 10-80% in 16 minutes.
Comfort and safety for families
The ID. ERA 8X rides on a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, with higher trims adding dual-chamber air suspension and continuously variable dampers. It supports 15-meter road preview and one-touch body leveling. In testing, the car stabilizes in 1.202 seconds after hitting a wave road at 80 km/h, and it completed a dual-lane change at 90.42 km/h on sand and a half-circle curve at 81.1 km/h.
The cabin is built around a 2,970 mm wheelbase and comes standard with Nappa leather seats, a 15.6-inch dual screen, a Smart Surface instrument panel, and a W-HUD head-up display. Front seats offer 10-point massage, heating, ventilation, and memory. The Ultra Long Range trim adds zero-gravity front seats and a right-rear electric leg rest, with rear seats reclining up to 133 degrees. A 12-liter dual-door refrigerator, 23-speaker 7.1.4 surround sound, and electric doors with an 80-degree rear opening cater to family needs.
SAIC Volkswagen emphasizes safety validation, noting that all performance claims come from real-vehicle tests, with over 1 million km of road testing and 500,000 km of durability testing completed before orders opened. The ID. ERA 8X fills a gap in the 250,000-yuan segment, complementing the 9X (priced around 300,000 yuan) and the 5S, which has already seen orders exceed 20,000 units. According to the Chinese outlet D1EV, the 9X, launched at the Beijing auto show in April 2026, secured over 11,000 lock-in orders in its first hour and delivered more than 7,000 units in its first month.
With the 8X, SAIC Volkswagen now covers the 200,000 to 350,000 yuan price band in the range-extender SUV market, targeting families seeking a balance of practicality, technology, and value.
