SAIC adds 1 billion yuan to Shangjie brand as Huawei partnership deepens

SAIC is investing an additional 1 billion yuan (about $141 million) in its Shangjie brand, co-developed with Huawei, to upgrade a dedicated plant and support a new mid-to-large family SUV planned for the coming months.

SAIC Motor and Huawei's terminal business are deepening their collaboration on the Shangjie brand, with SAIC committing an additional 1 billion yuan (about $141 million) to upgrade the dedicated Jinqiao plant. The investment will enhance smart manufacturing and logistics capabilities, according to Chinese automotive media outlet PCauto.

The move follows an initial 600 million yuan ($84.5 million) investment and the formation of a dedicated team of over 5,000 people when the brand was launched two years ago. Shangjie has since become one of the top-selling brands within Huawei's Harmony Intelligent Mobility Alliance (HIMA), with cumulative wholesale deliveries exceeding 50,000 units from January to August 2026.

Product expansion and market positioning

Shangjie currently offers two model lines, Z and H. The Z7, a fastback and shooting brake model, has been a volume driver in the mainstream price segment and helped the brand reach younger buyers. The next new model will be a mid-to-large family SUV, a segment where HIMA has a strong customer base. It will target new middle-class families in first- and second-tier cities, featuring Huawei's latest smart mobility solutions in cabin interaction, intelligent driving, and spaciousness.

The brand's retail network has expanded to nearly 1,000 dealerships, including about 200 dedicated stores, covering most first- to third-tier cities. SAIC and Huawei plan to refine the "dedicated store plus mall" model to improve operational efficiency.

The partnership leverages SAIC's 70 years of vehicle manufacturing and supply chain expertise with Huawei's strengths in smart mobility, the Harmony ecosystem, and intelligent driving. The two companies have recently held in-depth discussions on product definition and channel operations, signaling more refined collaboration ahead.

As Shangjie transitions from building its foundation to market expansion, the new investment and product lineup are expected to strengthen its position within HIMA and open new growth in the family vehicle market.
