Jaguar bets its future on Type 01, a 1030hp electric GT

Jaguar has unveiled the Type 01, a battery-electric grand tourer that marks a clean break from its past. With 1030hp, a 720km WLTP range, and a price of £130,000, the model is a high-stakes bet for the brand's survival.

After selling out the last of its F-Pace inventory late last year, Jaguar's showrooms have been empty for almost a year. Staff remain on duty and lights stay on, but there are no cars to sell. For a 90-year-old brand, that silence is not dignified—it's dangerous. So when the Type 01 was unveiled in New York, it felt less like a launch event and more like a public reveal of a gamble. Jaguar has cleared away nearly everything from its past and placed its chips on this one model. Its success will determine whether the brand has a future.

The Type 01 is a battery-electric (BEV) grand tourer that deliberately breaks with Jaguar's heritage. The name, explained managing director Glover, uses "0" to signify a reset to zero emissions and "1" to mark the start of a new era. That may sound like startup pitch language, but the "Type" prefix carries real weight: from the C-Type that won Le Mans in 1951 to the famous E-Type and the recently discontinued F-Type, nearly every memorable Jaguar has carried that name. The message is clear: use "Type" to honor the past, "0" to cut it off, and "1" to signal a genuine new beginning.

The design is a near-production version of the Type 00 concept shown in late 2024. It abandons Jaguar's traditional British elegance for a boxy, minimalist look that one might expect from a villain in a Gotham City movie. The front is closed, with no conventional grille; instead, a louvered panel sits in the center, housing the new Jaguar badge. The proportions are classic grand tourer: 5235mm long, just 1403mm high, with a 3200mm wheelbase, a long hood, short front overhang, and elongated rear. The 23-inch wheels add to the imposing stance. Jaguar even designed an 898mm "Luxury Gap"—the distance from the front axle to the front door—which accounts for 17% of the car's length, a nod to the E-Type's proportions. At the rear, the traditional window is replaced by a camera-based mirror, and a large louvered panel echoes the front. Despite the boxy shape, the Type 01 achieves a drag coefficient of 0.23, the best aerodynamic performance of any Jaguar to date.

Interior and powertrain

Inside, the Type 01 avoids the trend of a single giant screen. The chief interior designer says the layout emphasizes a central spine to create four distinct occupant spaces. Walnut veneers and chrome are gone, replaced by materials inspired by contemporary architecture and industrial design. The central spine and door tops are finished in a brass-toned metal, with warm gray tones from travertine stone and hand-woven textiles. A 24-inch OLED screen sits in front of the driver, and a 7-inch touchscreen on the spine controls climate and audio. The audio system includes a "panoramic sound bar" across the dashboard, a full-range 13-speaker array that creates a wall of sound, plus speakers embedded in the seats that let occupants feel bass frequencies, adding a 4D cinema-like immersion.

Power comes from three motors—one front, two rear—driving all four wheels with a combined 1030hp (768kW) and 1365Nm of torque. The 0-100km/h sprint takes 3.2 seconds. The 118kWh battery provides a WLTP range of 720km, which translates to an estimated 900km under China's CLTC standard—though CLTC figures are typically 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP, so real-world range will be lower.

Pricing starts at £130,000 in the UK, roughly 1.15 million yuan (about $162,000). That positions the Type 01 between the Porsche Taycan Turbo (about £135,000) and the Bentley Continental GT V8 (from about £170,000). According to the company, the Type 01 aims to fill the gap between BMW/Mercedes and Bentley/Aston Martin. But Jaguar's previous combustion models sold at far lower average prices, making this a bold—and risky—pricing strategy. Orders open in early 2027, with deliveries starting in the second half of the year. As reported by First Electric (D1EV), Jaguar's future now hinges on whether the Type 01 can convince buyers to pay a premium for a brand that has been out of the spotlight for too long.
