Hongqi G919: First Hardcore Off-Roader from China's Oldest Luxury Marque Starts at 359,800 Yuan

Hongqi has entered the hardcore off-road SUV segment with the G919, a 620 kW quad-motor 800V model priced from 359,800 yuan (about $50,700), taking on the likes of Tank 500 and Fangchengbao Bao 5.

Hongqi, the luxury arm of China's FAW Group, has unveiled its first hardcore off-road SUV, the G919, with pre-sales starting at 359,800 yuan (about $50,700) for the base four-motor Tuojing version. The mid-spec Yujing variant is priced at 399,800 yuan (about $56,300), and a limited edition at 439,800 yuan (about $62,000). All prices are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives, according to the report from D1EV.

Hardcore credentials

The G919 uses a body-on-frame construction with a ladder frame that is more than 90% high-strength or ultra-high-strength steel, giving a torsional rigidity of 9,500 Nm per degree. A mechanical differential lock responds in 200 milliseconds and can handle up to 12,600 Nm of torque. The powertrain combines a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with four electric motors on an 800-volt architecture, producing a combined 620 kW (about 831 hp) and 1,320 Nm of torque. The battery pack can withstand a 1,500-joule impact, ten times the Chinese national standard, according to the company.

Hongqi is positioning the G919 as a vehicle that blurs the line between off-road capability and urban comfort. It comes with a 62.9 kWh battery that provides a CLTC range of 280 km (about 174 miles; WLTP est. 224-238 miles). The company says the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in 12 minutes. The G919 also features a noise-masking algorithm and active noise cancellation to keep cabin noise increase below 1 decibel when the engine kicks in, and a four-motor steering system that allows a two-lane U-turn in one go.

Inside, the G919 is equipped with the 8295 chip, a 17.1-inch 3K display, an 18-speaker Dynaudio sound system, and a 7.3-liter refrigerator as standard. The driving assistance suite, called Sinan 5.0 Max, includes a variable-focus lidar with a 400-meter detection range and a tri-sensor setup combining visible light, laser, and infrared night vision.

Facing a crowded market

The 350,000 to 400,000 yuan segment is already fiercely competitive, with models like the Tank 500, Tank 700, Fangchengbao Bao 8, and Beijing BJ60e vying for buyers. Hongqi's brand heritage and perceived premium status could give it an edge, but it faces challenges in building off-road community and after-sales support, areas where rivals like Tank have established strong ecosystems.

According to D1EV, the hardcore off-road market in China reached 894,000 units in 2025, with a market size of 223.5 billion yuan (about $31.5 billion), and is projected to grow to 13% of the overall vehicle market by 2030. Hongqi's entry with the G919 is a bold move to capture a slice of this expanding segment.
