GWM's Tank 500 2027 model launches in China from 335,000 yuan

GWM's Tank 500 2027 model is now on sale in China with a starting price of 335,000 yuan (about $47,200), featuring 296 upgrades across software, hardware, and safety, plus a new 'Danxia Red' color.

GWM's Tank brand has launched the 2027 Tank 500 in China, with prices starting at 335,000 yuan (about $47,200) and ranging up to 375,000 yuan (about $52,800). According to the Chinese outlet 电动邦 (EV Kingdom), the new model brings 296 upgrades spanning software, hardware, and safety redundancy, while keeping the price unchanged from the previous version—a move the company calls 'more features, no price increase.' The launch also includes customer benefits valued at up to 76,000 yuan (about $10,700).

The Tank 500 is a full-size luxury SUV with a body-on-frame construction, positioning it as a rugged yet premium offering. The 2027 model introduces a new 'Danxia Red' exterior color, inspired by the red cliffs of China's Danxia landforms. The paint required over 500 color adjustments and eight coating steps, and its cost is reportedly seven times that of standard paint. Inside, a new black-and-gray interior theme draws from traditional Chinese ink painting aesthetics.

Luxury and smart features

The cabin features a 15.6-inch dual-screen setup, a 22-speaker sound system with four overhead channels, and a seven-screen configuration. All Nappa leather seats come with ventilation, heating, and massage functions. New additions include front electric folding leg rests, rear fold-out tables, and a 'big bed' mode for camping.

For driver assistance, the Tank 500 uses GWM's new Coffee Pilot 4 system, developed in a laboratory that GWM says cost over 12 million yuan (about $1.7 million) to build. The system is powered by a VLA (Vision-Language-Action) large model and an Nvidia Thor-U chip, with 27 sensing units including a lidar. It features a CoT (Chain-of-Thought) reasoning display that shows the vehicle's decision-making process. GWM claims the system can handle off-road conditions, with a laser radar that adjusts its height for modified vehicles.

Powertrain and safety

The Tank 500 is offered with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine, a powertrain GWM says it has spent over a decade developing. It also features a Hi4-Z power-split hybrid system, inspired by the Dujiangyan irrigation project, which has been tested over 6 million kilometers. This 'one vehicle, three architectures' approach covers pure internal combustion, hybrid, and range-extender modes.

Safety systems include a far-infrared night vision system with a detection range of 300 meters, intelligent blowout control that stabilizes the vehicle within 200 milliseconds, and a dual-chip redundant braking system. GWM also mentions anti-accelerator-misapplication and driver-assistance fallback features for extreme conditions. The company says it has tuned the vehicle for South American roads and Eastern European weather, and even optimized bolt coatings for durability.

The 2027 Tank 500 is aimed at buyers who need a versatile vehicle for both family and business use, reinforcing GWM's strategy of combining off-road capability with luxury and technology. The model represents GWM's commitment to 'long-termism' in the Chinese auto industry, according to 电动邦.
