Chinese display maker Guoxian Technology has launched a 4.1-inch Mini LED picture generation unit (PGU) module designed for augmented reality head-up displays (AR-HUDs) in premium electric vehicles. The module, developed with a Fresnel lens array collimating optical architecture and a proprietary local dimming algorithm, is positioned as a high-performance domestic alternative for AR-HUD image sources, according to Gasgoo.
Technical highlights
The PGU module integrates a self-developed Fresnel micro-lens array collimating backlight system that combines collimation and light homogenization, reducing the number of optical films and shrinking the module's thickness and volume to fit the tight cabin space of AR-HUDs. The backlight peak brightness reaches 1.2 million nits, while the PGU module's brightness consistently exceeds 100,000 nits, with a static contrast ratio of over 500,000:1.
The module supports 128 independent backlight zones for precise dynamic control and includes an adaptive image optimization algorithm that suppresses halos and ghosting caused by multi-layer optical reflections. It supports a field of view larger than 15 degrees, enabling large virtual images to be projected over long distances and covering multi-lane AR scenarios. Under normal conditions, the rated power consumption is kept under 10 watts, and for a full-white image, the total module power is below 26 watts.
Domestic supply chain and reliability
Guoxian Technology says the module's underlying optical structure, backlight driver, local dimming, and image optimization algorithms are all self-developed, freeing it from reliance on external chip supply chains. The product has passed automotive-grade reliability tests for high and low temperatures, vibration, humidity, and solar load, and supports deep customization of zone control, brightness output, and optical interfaces to meet the differentiated development needs of automakers and Tier 1 suppliers.
AR-HUD PGUs are critical components affecting daytime visibility, image purity, and energy consumption. Traditional TFT backlight solutions suffer from high light loss and insufficient brightness, while mainstream DLP solutions face high costs and constrained external chip supply. Guoxian Technology's Mini LED PGU module aims to address these industry pain points and accelerate the domestic substitution of core image source technology for automotive displays.
