Geener Microelectronics and Wolfspeed sign SiC module supply pact for EV inverters

Geener Microelectronics and Wolfspeed have signed a memorandum of cooperation covering silicon carbide chip supply, technical adaptation and market expansion, with initial applications in new-energy vehicle main inverters.

Chinese power-module maker Geener Microelectronics (Jingneng) has signed a memorandum of cooperation with US silicon carbide (SiC) specialist Wolfspeed to deepen collaboration on chip supply, technical adaptation and market expansion, according to Chinese automotive outlet Gasgoo.

The agreement was signed at Geely Technology Tower in Hangzhou. Under the memorandum, Geener's next-generation power-module platform will prioritise the adoption of Wolfspeed's SiC bare dies. Once module-platform adaptation is complete, the products will first be used in main inverters for new-energy vehicles and other core scenarios, Gasgoo reported.

Geener will also give priority to Wolfspeed's technical solutions in future module projects and grant Wolfspeed commercial and supply preference in module delivery. In return, Wolfspeed will develop bare dies that meet or exceed Geener's performance indicators using its mature 200mm SiC production line, providing stable supply and reasonable commercial support.

Beyond chip supply, the two companies will jointly approach leading Chinese automakers' high-voltage electric platforms to compete for design-win projects, the report said.

Partners with complementary strengths

Geener Microelectronics has long focused on the R&D and manufacturing of power semiconductor modules, with core business in the new-energy vehicle sector. The company has full-process capabilities from module design and packaging to reliability verification, and has delivered high-reliability power-module solutions to automakers. It is also expanding into emerging areas such as AI data centres.

Wolfspeed is a representative company in global SiC technology, with a mature 200mm SiC mass-production line and deep accumulation in chip R&D and capacity supply.

The cooperation combines Wolfspeed's advanced SiC chip technology and capacity with Geener's stable module design, packaging and verification capabilities. The two companies said the collaboration is expected to further stabilise the new-energy vehicle supply chain and push electric vehicles toward higher-voltage, higher-efficiency technology routes.

In the initial phase, the cooperation will focus on the new-energy vehicle sector, with a possible later extension to AI data centres, industrial power supplies and energy storage, providing efficient and reliable SiC solutions across multiple fields, according to Gasgoo.
