Geely has launched the new Galaxy E5, a refreshed battery-electric SUV that brings 800-volt architecture to China's mainstream 100,000-yuan price bracket. The model went on sale on September 23 with six trim levels, priced from 97,800 to 137,800 yuan (about $13,800 to $19,400) after a limited-time discount, according to Chinese outlet 电动邦 (DianDongBang).
The Galaxy E5 is the first SUV built on Geely's Galaxy 'pure electric 2.0' platform. It replaces a model that has sold over 300,000 units globally since its 2024 debut, with exports to 84 countries and three consecutive months of sales above 10,000 units. The new version targets families in China's fiercely competitive compact BEV (battery-electric) segment.
800V as standard, fast charging in under 9 minutes
All six variants come with an 800-volt electrical architecture, a feature previously reserved for more expensive models. The system supports peak charging rates of 6C and a maximum power of 460 kW, allowing a charge from 10% to 70% in 8 minutes 25 seconds at room temperature. The E5 is compatible with 99% of public charging piles in China, including full coverage of seven major operators such as Teld and State Grid, and supports automatic payment at Geely's own 12,000 charging points.
The battery is a 'Shen Dun Jin Zhuan' ultra-short blade cell that passes 23 of 24 new national safety standards, with a cycle life of 3,500 charges, equivalent to over 1 million km. The electric drive system achieves 93.8% efficiency, and energy consumption is rated at 11.8 kWh per 100 km.
Rear-drive handling and upgraded cabin
Geely has switched the E5 from front-wheel drive to a native rear-wheel-drive platform, with a near 50:50 weight distribution. The rear five-link independent suspension is standard, and a CCD adaptive damping system is available on higher trims. The chassis was tuned by Geely's European research team, and the moose test (a rapid lane-change maneuver) is completed at 81 km/h.
Inside, the E5 runs the Flyme Auto 2 system on a 4nm 'Long Ying' chip with 48 TOPS of AI computing power, consuming about 60% less energy than the previous 8295 chip. The cabin offers 88% space efficiency, a 160-liter front trunk, and a rear cargo volume that expands to 1,838 liters with the seats folded. A 23-speaker 7.1.4 surround sound system and a built-in refrigerator are available on mid and high trims.
Safety features include AEB (automatic emergency braking) that can stop the car at speeds up to 130 km/h, and a tire-blowout stability system that keeps the vehicle stable at 160 km/h on straight roads and 120 km/h in corners. The body uses a cell-to-body (CTB) design with torsional rigidity of 36,000 N·m per degree.
The Galaxy E5 is offered in six versions with CLTC ranges from 530 km to 635 km. Note that CLTC figures are typically 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP, so a WLTP estimate would be roughly 450-540 km (est.). Prices are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives; buyers can also claim a 6,000 yuan purchase tax subsidy and a 4,000 yuan insurance subsidy for a limited time.
With the 800V platform now standard in the 100,000-yuan segment, the Galaxy E5 raises the bar for competitors like BYD's Yuan Plus and other compact EVs. Whether Geely can repeat the previous model's global success will depend on how well the balanced package resonates with buyers beyond China.
