Geely Auto, the core brand of China's Geely Holding, has officially entered the Canadian market, according to a report from D1EV. The company has completed its corporate setup in Canada and started operations, and is now building out its retail and service network ahead of launching its first models for Canadian customers in 2027.
Geely said it will combine its global technology base with local market insight to develop products and services tailored to Canadian driving conditions. It plans to work with local dealers who know the market and have deep community ties, building a support system that covers the full ownership cycle. The company stressed that a solid retail and service network is essential to succeeding in Canada.
Geely's confidence in entering Canada comes from its strengths in vehicle engineering, safety technology, electrification, intelligent technology and advanced manufacturing. Its brands - including Geely, Zeekr and Lynk & Co - already sell in more than 100 countries and regions, supported by a global R&D and design network focused on electrification and next-generation vehicle technology.
EU-China deal on hybrid exports
Separately, the EU said China has agreed to significantly reduce its exports of hybrid vehicles to Europe, a development that could ease trade tensions between the two sides. EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said after talks in Beijing on October 9 that the two sides had reached an agreement to halve Chinese exports of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles to Europe.
The agreement is expected to cover the next four years, but neither side has specified how the export volumes will be controlled. Bloomberg reported earlier this week that the EU is preparing so-called safeguard measures, which typically use tariffs to curb imports above a certain quota.
If implemented, the deal would soften trade friction, but the exact mechanism remains unclear and the dispute over tariffs on battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) is unresolved, so the agreement's effectiveness and real impact are still to be seen.
Onvo hits 200,000 deliveries
On October 8, Onvo, Nio's family-focused sub-brand, delivered its 200,000th vehicle, an Onvo L90, to the family of Geng Chenchen, a well-known Chinese TV host. Since the first Onvo L60 was delivered in 2024, Onvo has reached 200,000 deliveries in two years, putting it among the top three fastest-growing new EV brands in China.
Onvo, whose slogan is "technology for the family," has launched three models: the L60, L80 and L90. The L60 offers mid-to-large SUV space in a mid-size SUV body, with a 763-litre boot and a 139-litre underfloor compartment. The L80 and L90 are both 5,145 mm long, with a wheelbase-to-length ratio of 60.4% and a space utilisation rate of 81.5%. The L80 has a 240-litre front trunk and a 1,200-litre boot, while the L90 offers more than one metre of legroom in every row when full, a 430-litre boot (including a 106-litre underfloor space) and a 240-litre front trunk.
On safety, all Onvo models are developed to meet both Chinese and European five-star crash standards. The L60 was the first BEV to score all-round excellent marks in the C-IASI crash test, and the first BEV to earn five stars in the 2024 C-NCAP and C-GCAP programmes. The L90 has achieved five-star ratings in C-NCAP, C-GCAP and C-ICAP, and was named "2025 Grand Slam Model" by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center. The L80 shares its platform with the L90 and has passed tests including gravel scraping with 600 mm of water fording, and a rear-end collision with a five-tonne truck.
Onvo's nationwide battery-swap network provides three-minute swaps, and the battery-as-a-service model means batteries are always managed and monitored, addressing the issue of battery and vehicle life mismatch. The L90 can carry six people and ten suitcases, with VIP-level seating in every row and luggage space at both front and rear.
According to D1EV, Onvo's achievement of 200,000 deliveries in two years shows that its family positioning combined with battery-swap technology has found traction in the market.
