GAC Trumpchi unveiled its new Yue 7 SUV in China on September 22, with an entry price of 161,800 yuan (about $22,800) before taxes and incentives. The launch was marked by strong demand: orders exceeded 16,815 units within 30 minutes, according to D1EV, the Chinese outlet that reported the event.
The Yue 7 is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV that blends urban comfort with off-road capability. It is powered by GAC's self-developed Xingyuan plug-in hybrid system, paired with a 46-kWh battery from CATL's Shenxing series. The battery enables a CLTC electric-only range of 261 km (about 162 miles), though that figure is measured under China's CLTC standard, which is typically 15-20% more optimistic than the WLTP cycle; a WLTP-equivalent range would be roughly 210-220 km (est.). In hybrid mode, the vehicle achieves a fuel consumption of 6.21 L/100 km under WLTP conditions.
The powertrain combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with electric motors, delivering a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in 4.2 seconds. GAC claims this performance is comparable to premium performance cars. The Yue 7 also comes with a suite of driver-assistance features, including 27 sensors, a 192-line LiDAR system, and a perception range of up to 280 meters. The system is based on a one-stage end-to-end large model co-developed with WeRide, enabling advanced navigation on city roads and highways.
Off-road capability and versatility
For off-road enthusiasts, the Yue 7 is equipped with front and rear mechanical differential locks plus an electronic center lock, a configuration typically found in 300,000-yuan (about $42,300) premium off-roaders. It also features an AI-based terrain management system, a "tiger turn" function for tight maneuvers, low-speed off-road crawl control, and hill descent control. The adaptive air suspension with closed dual-chamber air springs and semi-active dampers automatically adjusts ride height and firmness to suit the terrain.
The vehicle's body is built on a "star ship" architecture with a five-longitudinal and thirteen-lateral protective frame, and an integrated embedded frame that houses the battery. The battery pack sits between the frame rails, with a ground clearance of 391 mm, reducing the risk of underbody damage. GAC says the Yue 7 passed a rollover test from a 46-meter-high slope with 11 rolls, and has been certified for 500,000 km of equivalent durability testing.
Inside, the Yue 7 features a 1.1-meter panoramic screen and a "star ring" display. The infotainment system includes three animated mascots and a "time badge" feature that automatically lights up when the vehicle enters a new city or landmark, creating a travel log. The vehicle also offers a one-touch electric bed function for camping, with optional roof tents, side awnings, and a tailgate extension platform that can create a "two-bedroom, one-living-room, one-kitchen" setup. Two 220V power outlets allow for outdoor cooking and entertainment.
For customization, the Yue 7 provides 37 original expansion ports, including four aviation-style switch positions, allowing owners to add accessories without drilling or cutting. The vehicle also comes with a pre-installed drone docking system, powered by a Qualcomm 8838 chip, which can automatically generate travel videos.
Pricing and launch offers
The Yue 7 is available in several trims, with prices ranging from 161,800 yuan to 207,800 yuan (about $22,800 to $29,300) before taxes and incentives. GAC is offering up to 56,000 yuan (about $7,900) in launch benefits, including an off-road package with a front differential lock, a camping kit, and extended warranties for the air suspension. Other incentives include trade-in subsidies of up to 10,000 yuan for GAC brand owners, 0% down payment financing, free charging pile installation, and a 30-day delivery promise.
The launch also introduced a new service ecosystem called "Qiye Tianxia" (Off-Road World), which includes professional training, personalized modification, community activities, and vehicle support. GAC has partnered with rental company eHi to offer the Yue 7 for short- and long-term rentals in popular self-drive destinations like Xinjiang and Chengdu.
With the Yue 7, GAC aims to bridge the gap between city driving and off-road adventures, targeting families who want a versatile vehicle. The strong initial order numbers suggest that the model has struck a chord with Chinese consumers seeking a blend of performance, technology, and outdoor lifestyle.
