GAC Deepens Europe Push with AION UT Cross Debut at Paris Motor Show

GAC unveiled the AION UT Cross at the Paris Motor Show and outlined plans for local production, a European R&D center, and a 180-plus outlet network by 2026.

GAC Group used the Paris Motor Show to showcase its expanding European ambitions, unveiling the AION UT Cross, a crossover BEV (battery-electric) developed by its Milan design center. The model made its global debut alongside five other vehicles from GAC's Trumpchi, Aion, and Hyptec lineups, according to Gasgoo, a Chinese automotive news outlet.

The AION UT Cross targets the light outdoor segment, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase and a 440-liter trunk. It offers a WLTP range of 400 km (about 249 miles) and can charge from 30% to 80% in 24 minutes. GAC says the chassis was tuned for European roads, and the car adds roof rails as standard.

Localization Strategy

GAC's presence in Paris went beyond the new model. The company announced a European brand slogan, "GAC. THE ENGINEERS," and a global service brand, GAC CARE+. GAC general manager He Xianqing said Europe is both a key market and a cornerstone of its global brand strategy. The AION V and AION UT are already being produced locally in Europe, and a European R&D center is slated to open in 2027, with plans to build a team of over 100 local engineers.

GAC's European sales network now covers 30 countries, with a target of more than 180 sales and service outlets by the end of 2026. The company is focusing on the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. GAC CARE+ will debut in Europe, offering three years of free roadside assistance, an eight-year or 160,000 km vehicle warranty, and an eight-year or 200,000 km battery warranty. Using a parts distribution center in Rotterdam, GAC claims an order fulfillment rate above 95%, with shipments typically dispatched within 36 hours.

GAC also announced a partnership with English Premier League club Chelsea FC as its official automotive partner, aiming to boost brand visibility in Europe.

Market Challenges

GAC's shift from simply importing vehicles to building out R&D, manufacturing, sales, and after-sales infrastructure marks a deeper commitment to the European market. However, the region's mature automotive industry and intense competition mean the success of these investments remains to be seen, as the company must convert local presence into sustained sales and brand recognition.
