Freelander has begun delivering its first production model, the Freelander 8, marking the revived SUV brand's move from launch announcements to real-world customer use. The handovers started on Sept 19, according to NetEase Auto, with the first batch of owners receiving their cars at events including a ceremony in Beijing.
The Freelander 8 is positioned as a "luxury technology all-terrain SUV," a label the brand says is meant to cover city commuting, family travel and demanding road conditions rather than a single usage scenario. The model is the first product from the Freelander brand, which is jointly operated by Chery Jaguar Land Rover and uses the historical Freelander name in a new electric-vehicle lineup.
Standard equipment and all-terrain hardware
Freelander is leaning heavily on standard features to set the 8 apart. Every version includes Huawei's Qiankun ADS 5, a branded advanced driver-assistance system, along with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 flagship cockpit chip and a 46.3-inch MiniLED 8K display mounted across the dashboard. The company's reasoning, as reported by NetEase Auto, is to keep capability gaps between trim levels small at a time when intelligence is becoming a key purchase factor for luxury SUVs.
The 8 also comes with an 800V high-voltage electrical platform, an i-ATS intelligent all-terrain system, closed double-chamber air suspension, continuously variable damping shock absorbers, rear-wheel steering and a two-speed rear motor. The combination is intended to preserve off-road and rough-road ability even as the vehicle is electrified and loaded with digital features, the company said.
Freelander says the all-terrain focus is not simply a marketing label but part of a product differentiator built around the chassis, electric drive and four-wheel-drive system. The model is designed to meet expectations from buyers who want a large luxury SUV for everyday use without giving up capability when the pavement ends.
Delivery network and early owners
At the Beijing delivery ceremony, Freelander's global CEO Wen Fei, who also serves as director and executive vice-president of Chery Jaguar Land Rover, handed over vehicles alongside the first owners. Actor Duan Yihong and singer Mao Buyi were also among the early customers, according to NetEase Auto.
The brand's retail network now includes more than 120 sales, delivery and service centers covering over 65 cities, with plans to expand to 100 cities during 2026. Freelander says it intends to treat customer relationships as an ongoing engagement rather than a one-off transaction, planning events, owner activities and co-creation programs to build long-term connections.
The delivery milestone shifts the focus for Freelander from product reveals to execution. As the 8 scales up, the company will be judged on how its driver-assistance systems perform in daily use, whether the smart cabin lives up to its specifications, how the chassis matches the luxury positioning, and whether after-sales service keeps pace with a growing ownership base. For a new entrant in China's fiercely competitive new-energy vehicle market, the start of deliveries is the beginning of a much longer test.
