FAW-VW launches ID. AURA T6 electric SUV from 129,900 yuan

FAW-Volkswagen has launched the ID. AURA T6, a family-oriented electric SUV, with prices starting at 129,900 yuan (about $18,300) and pre-orders exceeding 30,000 units.

FAW-Volkswagen launched its new ID. AURA T6 electric SUV at an event in Guangzhou on September 20, according to Chinese outlet D1EV. The model, positioned as a "smart and stable pure electric SUV for the whole family," is offered in four trims: 540 Pro, 660 Pro, 660 Max with lidar, and 660 Ultra with lidar, with prices ranging from 129,900 yuan to 166,900 yuan (about $18,300 to $23,500). Pre-orders have already surpassed 30,000 units, the company said.

The ID. AURA T6 is the first model in FAW-Volkswagen's new energy vehicle lineup, marking the brand's entry into what it calls the "smart electric 2.0 era." The vehicle features a body measuring 4,811 mm long, 1,879 mm wide and 1,648 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,836 mm. It achieves a low drag coefficient of 0.245 while maintaining a cabin space efficiency of 85.3 percent, according to the company.

Interior and smart features

Inside, the ID. AURA T6 offers 38 storage compartments and a front trunk for the first time. The front seats can fold flat to create a 1.8-meter-long sleeping space, and the passenger seat features 12-way electric adjustment, ten-point massage, ventilation, heating and an electric leg rest. The rear doors open to 881 mm, making it easier for elderly passengers or parents with children to enter and exit.

The vehicle's cockpit is powered by a 4nm automotive-grade chip, supporting four-zone voice interaction and recognition of nine Chinese dialects. It includes 23 entertainment apps and an AI assistant. For driver assistance, the ID. AURA T6 debuts the Horizon Journey 6H chip and uses a one-stage end-to-end driving assistance solution developed by Horizon Robotics, along with a 192-line lidar and multiple sensors for 720-degree environmental perception.

The system supports navigation-assisted driving on highways and in cities, as well as smart parking, with the ability to handle scenarios such as following traffic, lane changes, narrow-road passing and mixed pedestrian-vehicle environments, according to FAW-Volkswagen.

Battery and safety

The ID. AURA T6 is powered by a CATL battery pack, with a maximum CLTC range of 660 km (about 410 miles; WLTP est. around 560 km/348 miles). The vehicle's energy consumption is as low as 12.5 kWh per 100 km, aided by a nine-in-one electric drive system and a heat pump. The battery has undergone more than 400 safety tests, roughly eight times the number required by Chinese national standards, the company said.

The vehicle uses a front MacPherson and rear five-link suspension with variable damping shock absorbers, tuned specifically for Chinese road conditions. It has a turning radius of 4.75 meters and features wide tires (255 mm front, 265 mm rear) with a near 50:50 weight distribution. A smart anti-motion-sickness mode optimizes regenerative braking and power delivery to reduce passenger discomfort.

FAW-Volkswagen is offering a comprehensive ownership package, including lifetime warranties on the vehicle and its battery and electric drive system, lifetime roadside assistance, and coverage for battery degradation and certain accidents involving smart parking or driver assistance features in the first year. Buyers of the top 660 Max lidar trim can receive a 10,000 yuan (about $1,400) comfort seat package and a 7.1.4-channel sound system for free for a limited time, while other trims get front seat heating and ventilation worth 3,000 yuan (about $420).

The ID. AURA T6 is priced as a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives. The model is part of FAW-Volkswagen's broader push to accelerate its electric and intelligent transformation in China's competitive EV market.
