Dongfeng Motor has taken the wraps off a new hybrid drive prototype, the Mach Power P2.5 single-motor hybrid electric drive, which rolled off the production line in Hubei on September 23. The development marks another step forward in the automaker's hybrid architecture, according to Chinese automotive outlet Gasgoo.
The new unit adopts a single-motor design that builds on the proven reliability of traditional dual-motor hybrids, but with optimized architecture and highly integrated construction. Compared with Dongfeng's existing P1+P3 dual-motor hybrid drive, the prototype weighs 39% less, offering significant lightweighting benefits.
The weight reduction does more than just lighten the vehicle. It also improves axle load distribution, freeing up space for interior layout and potentially boosting range. In everyday driving, the motor can decouple from the wheels to reduce drag losses and lower energy consumption per 100 km. For long-distance journeys with a depleted battery, the system uses a high-speed engine direct-drive approach, which cuts fuel consumption by 15% compared with similar products in the same segment. When fully charged, it delivers the quiet smoothness of a pure electric vehicle, while in depleted mode it maintains economical and reliable performance.
Mach Power family expands
Since the Mach Power brand was launched in 2021, it has built a product matrix covering four areas: internal combustion, hybrid, electric, and hydrogen powertrains. Its hybrid-specific engine thermal efficiency and multi-gear hybrid architecture are said to be among the industry's leading. Dongfeng plans to further enrich its Mach hybrid product lineup, offering efficient, economical, and reliable powertrain options for more models.
The prototype's development underscores Dongfeng's push to refine hybrid technology as Chinese automakers compete on efficiency and cost. The company has not yet announced which production models will adopt the new drive unit.
