Dongfeng and Huawei deepen partnership, plan joint smart EVs

Dongfeng Motor's general manager Feng Changjun met Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei in Shenzhen to discuss deeper strategic cooperation, including joint development of new models such as the Yijing X9, Mengshi X700 and Voyah Dreamer 9.

Dongfeng Motor and Huawei are deepening their strategic partnership, with top executives meeting in Shenzhen to discuss joint vehicle development and broader collaboration in intelligent driving and digital transformation. Feng Changjun, general manager and deputy party secretary of Dongfeng, held talks with Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei and senior Huawei representatives on September 22, according to Chinese automotive news outlet Gasgoo.

Focus on safety and quality

During the meeting, Ren Zhengfei stressed that vehicle manufacturing should be rooted in safety and quality, and expressed Huawei's willingness to leverage its strengths to help Dongfeng build intelligent vehicles that can withstand market scrutiny. Feng echoed this view, saying safety and quality are the foundation for gaining market trust in smart cars. The two sides also discussed expanding their ecosystem cooperation, including exploring sustainable business models for vehicle-to-grid interaction with power grid companies, as well as applications in vehicle connectivity, intelligent transportation and smart city integration.

Dongfeng and Huawei have a long history of cooperation, and the meeting reviewed the progress of their joint efforts in vehicle intelligence, enterprise digitalization and ecosystem building. The companies aim to explore a path of full-stack native integration between a state-owned automaker and a technology firm, pushing China's smart vehicle industry toward systematic innovation.

Joint models in the pipeline

The executives exchanged views on several strategic new models being jointly developed, including the Yijing X9, Mengshi X700 and Voyah Dreamer 9. They also discussed future product definitions, intelligent technology implementation and marketing strategies. Dongfeng is currently advancing its 'Dongfeng Rises 2030' plan, and recently unveiled initiatives such as 'Tianjing Zero Carbon' and 'Horizon Sail', according to Gasgoo.

No specific timeline or pricing for the joint models was announced. The meeting underscores the growing ties between traditional automakers and tech companies in China's competitive EV market, where Huawei has emerged as a major supplier of intelligent driving systems and vehicle software.
