Denza Z9S launches in China from 255,800 yuan, undercutting pre-sale price by 64,000 yuan

Denza, BYD's premium brand, has launched the Z9S electric sports sedan in China with a starting price of 255,800 yuan (about $36,000), 64,000 yuan below its pre-sale price. The model targets younger buyers with fast charging, long range, and smart cabin features.

Denza, BYD's premium electric vehicle brand, launched the Z9S sports sedan in China on September 23 with a starting price of 255,800 yuan (about $36,000), undercutting its pre-sale price by 64,000 yuan. The move signals Denza's push to attract younger buyers in the competitive pure-electric sedan segment, according to NetEase Auto.

Three trims, one clear strategy

The Z9S is offered in three trims: the Flash Honor (闪充尊荣型) at 255,800 yuan, the Flash Flagship (闪充旗舰型) at 275,800 yuan, and the e³ Flash Performance (易三方闪充性能型) at 325,800 yuan. All prices are Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives. Notably, the top trim is only 6,000 yuan more than the pre-sale starting price.

The base Flash Honor trim includes most core features, a 102 kWh battery, and a CLTC range of 920 km (about 570 miles). The mid-level Flash Flagship adds a zero-gravity driver's seat, exterior voice control, and a powered front trunk, with a larger 122 kWh battery boosting CLTC range to 1,100 km (about 684 miles). The top e³ Performance trim focuses on performance, featuring a 1,201 PS motor output, a 0-100 km/h time of 2.68 seconds, and Denza's e³ platform capabilities such as round-corner turning and assisted parking. It also includes an active rear spoiler, Nappa leather seats, and a smart display, but its battery is the same 102 kWh unit as the base trim, yielding a CLTC range of 780 km (about 485 miles).

CLTC figures are generally 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP; estimated WLTP ranges would be roughly 780 km, 935 km, and 660 km respectively.

Design and tech aimed at younger buyers

The Z9S adopts a simpler, more elegant design than its siblings, the Z9 and Z9GT, which the company says should appeal to younger consumers looking for a sporty sedan. It is the first model globally to support Apple CarPlay's small-window mode, in addition to mainstream Android and Huawei HarmonyOS connectivity, making it the only car that supports handset integration across all major phone brands, according to NetEase Auto.

The cabin features a next-generation intelligent cockpit with an AI assistant and supports external smart devices. The car also includes BYD's second-generation blade battery and flash charging technology, which the company claims can charge from 5% to 80% in about nine minutes, along with the God's Eye 5.0 advanced driver assistance system.

The Z9S fills the gap left by the discontinued Z9 sedan, which struggled with overlapping positioning and design. Denza positions the Z9S as a complement to the Z9GT shooting brake, targeting different buyers: the Z9GT for those seeking a more flamboyant style, and the Z9S for younger, sporty-minded customers. Analysts at NetEase Auto suggest the Z9S will compete with models from Xiaomi and Tesla, leveraging its fast charging, long range, and smart cabin features.

Denza is also preparing the N8, a young, tech-focused model expected to compete with Nio and Li Auto, as part of its strategy to broaden its appeal and boost sales, which have earned the brand the nickname 'Denza 10,000' for its monthly volume. The Z9S launch is seen as a key step in shedding that image and embracing a younger, sportier direction.
