Denza Z9S launches from 255,800 yuan with 1,100 km CLTC range and 5-minute fast charge

Denza's new Z9S electric fastback starts at 255,800 yuan ($36,000) in China, offering up to 1,100 km CLTC range, 5-minute fast charging, and standard air suspension, rear-wheel steering and lidar ADAS.

Denza, the premium brand jointly owned by BYD and Mercedes-Benz, launched the Z9S electric fastback in China on September 23, with prices from 255,800 yuan to 325,800 yuan (about $36,000 to $45,900, Chinese guide prices before taxes and incentives). The three variants split between a long-range rear-drive model and two all-wheel-drive performance versions, and the lineup showcases several of BYD's latest technologies, including second-generation Blade batteries, the e³ (Yi San Fang) three-motor platform, YunNian-A suspension and the God's Eye 5.0 driver assistance suite, according to Chinese outlet 电动邦 (Dian Dong Bang).

The Z9S's headline figures are a claimed CLTC range of up to 1,100 km and a fast-charging time of 5 minutes from 10 to 70 percent state of charge. The flagship variant carries a 122.5 kWh battery and is rated at 1,100 km on the optimistic CLTC cycle (roughly 900-935 km WLTP, est.), while the ZunRong trim uses a 102.3 kWh pack for 920 km CLTC (around 750-780 km WLTP, est.) and the performance version, with its three-motor powertrain, manages 780 km CLTC (around 640-660 km WLTP, est.). All variants sit on a 1,000 V electrical architecture, and Denza says the 10-97 percent charge takes 9 minutes, or 12 minutes from 20-97 percent at minus 30 degrees Celsius.

Near-D-class body with standard luxury hardware

The Z9S measures 5,090 mm long with a 3,025 mm wheelbase, putting it at the threshold of the D-segment in Chinese classification. Its drag coefficient is 0.22 Cd, aided by a fastback silhouette, frameless doors and semi-hidden door handles. Standard equipment across the range includes YunNian-A closed double-chamber air suspension with up to 50 mm of travel adjustment, rear-wheel steering, a 17.3-inch 3K central touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 26-inch AR head-up display and an 18-speaker Devialet audio system with Dolby Atmos. The rear seat cushion is extended to 564 mm, and boot capacity is 470 litres, expanding to 1,691 litres with the rear seats folded, plus a 120-litre front trunk.

The performance variant adds a 15.6-inch smart screen with an ecosystem interface for magnetic accessories, Nappa leather and front seats with zero-gravity function, 16-way adjustment, ventilation, heating and ten-point massage. The flagship and performance trims get dual zero-gravity front seats as standard, while the ZunRong requires a 5,000 yuan option for the driver's seat. A 7-litre smart fridge with temperature control from minus 6 to 50 degrees Celsius, three-zone climate control and a 795 mm panoramic roof are also part of the package.

Three-motor performance and safety credentials

The performance variant leads the powertrain lineup with a 270 kW front motor and two 310 kW rear motors, producing a combined 1,210 PS (about 890 kW) and a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 2.68 seconds. The single-motor rear-drive version uses a 370 kW rear motor and reaches 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. Denza claims the performance car can maintain stability after a tyre blowout at 200 km/h on straights and 160 km/h in corners, and the Z9S body uses 91.1 percent high-strength steel and aluminium, with 2,000 MPa hot-formed steel in key areas, plus nine airbags including a front far-side airbag.

The God's Eye 5.0 driver assistance system is standard across all trims, with one lidar, three 4D millimetre-wave radars, 11 cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors supporting urban and highway navigation assist and full-scene parking. The performance version adds e³ parking, which can rotate the car into tight spaces by locking individual wheels. Denza says the system is trained on more than 230 million km of data per day.

The Z9S enters a crowded premium BEV segment in China, where it competes with models such as the Xiaomi SU7 and Zeekr 001. Its combination of very long range, fast charging and standard luxury features at a starting price below 260,000 yuan positions it as a value-focused alternative in the upper mid-size electric sedan class.
