Denza N8 to launch in October with 1,003 km range, tri-motor powertrain

Denza's new N8 large electric SUV, due in October, claims a 1,003 km CLTC range, 890 kW tri-motor output and ultra-fast charging, positioning it against the Nio ES8 and Xpeng G9.

Denza, BYD's premium brand, will launch the new N8 large electric SUV in October, according to a report by NetEase Auto. The model targets the high-end battery-electric SUV segment with a claimed 1,003 km range, tri-motor powertrain and ultra-fast charging, putting it in direct competition with the Nio ES8 and Xpeng G9.

Specs and positioning

The N8 measures 5,150 mm long, 1,999 mm wide and 1,820 mm tall, with a 3,075 mm wheelbase - longer than the ES8's, giving it an edge in interior space, the report notes. The G9 is more compact, making it easier to park in tight urban streets. The N8's design is described as rounded and conservative, with a full-width light bar at the rear, suited to both family use and business settings, though its size could be a drawback in older residential areas.

Inside, the N8 features a 1.1-metre panoramic head-up display projecting speed, navigation and driver-assistance information, plus a 30-inch central screen that can be split between driver and passenger. European wood trim, ambient lighting and a crystal rotary knob with 64 diamond-cut facets round out the cabin. NetEase Auto cautions that such features are likely reserved for higher trims, urging buyers to check the configuration list before ordering.

The SUV is equipped with BYD's God's Eye B advanced driver-assistance system, supporting highway navigation, urban assistance and automated parking. The report notes it remains a driver-assistance system, not full autonomy, with some high-level scenarios still requiring over-the-air updates.

Powertrain and charging

Power comes from the e-Fang three-motor system with a combined output of up to 890 kW (about 1,194 hp), paired with second-generation Blade batteries. The maximum pure-electric range is 1,003 km on the CLTC cycle - a figure roughly 15-20 percent more optimistic than a WLTP estimate, which would be around 800-850 km (est.).

Denza claims the fast-charging system can replenish the battery in 5 minutes to a usable level and 9 minutes to full, with only 3 extra minutes needed at minus 30 degrees Celsius. NetEase Auto notes that real-world range will drop in cold weather and cautions against treating lab figures as typical.

The N8's strengths, the report says, are its long wheelbase, four-figure range, rapid charging and high-performance powertrain. Its weaknesses include the bulky body, limited urban agility and the concentration of premium cabin features in top trims. Whether it can shake up the premium electric SUV segment will depend on pricing, the report concludes, predicting it could draw customers from rivals if the price is right.
