Cadillac XT5 PHEV launches in China from 259,900 yuan with lidar and Brembo brakes

Cadillac's XT5 PHEV plug-in hybrid SUV has gone on sale in China at a promotional price of 259,900 yuan (about $36,600), with standard lidar, Momenta driver assistance and Brembo six-piston brakes. The model claims a CLTC electric range of 215 km and a combined range of 1,360 km.

Cadillac has launched the XT5 PHEV (plug-in hybrid) in China at a promotional price of 259,900 yuan (about $36,600), undercutting many luxury-brand rivals while adding standard lidar and a full suite of driver-assistance hardware. According to NetEase Auto, the model delivered 3,000 units in its first three weeks on sale.

Standard equipment, from lidar to six-piston brakes

The XT5 PHEV carries over the styling of the petrol XT5, adding a roof-mounted lidar sensor and an active grille. It measures 4,888 mm long, 1,957 mm wide and 1,688 mm tall on a 2,863 mm wheelbase, and rides on 21-inch wheels with 265 mm tyres. Brembo six-piston brake calipers are standard, as is all-wheel drive. Two new paint options join the range: a matte Canyon Orange and a Sand White.

Inside, the cabin features a 33-inch 9K curved display with an AKG sound system, powered by a Qualcomm 8775P chip running Baidu's Doubao voice assistant with four-zone recognition. A driver-facing camera and five camera views support a sentry mode that records anomalies automatically. The front seats offer heating, ventilation and lumbar support in Fine Nappa semi-aniline leather, while the rear floor is flat and the centre armrest has been shortened by 84 mm to free up legroom.

Driver assistance is a headline feature. The XT5 PHEV comes with lidar and Momenta's R7 world model as standard, covering urban roads, unpaved surfaces and mountain passes. The system can handle congested traffic, avoid construction zones and cut-ins, and reverse-track out of dead ends for up to 150 metres. It can also remember frequent parking spots for one-tap parking.

Powertrain and range

Power comes from Cadillac's Super Hybrid system, a 5C native plug-in hybrid architecture with three electric motors (P1, P3, P4) and a two-speed DHT gearbox. Combined output is 385 kW (about 516 hp) and 740 Nm, with a 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds, or 5.4 seconds when the battery is depleted. The CLTC electric range is 215 km, with a combined range of 1,360 km. Note that CLTC figures are typically 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP, so a real-world WLTP estimate would be roughly 172-183 km. Fuel consumption when the battery is flat is 6.05 L/100 km, and the car runs on 92-octane petrol. Fast charging takes 15 minutes to go from 30% to 80%, and the car supports 6 kW vehicle-to-load power export.

The suspension uses a second-generation preview RTD system that reads road surfaces 20 metres ahead and adjusts damping 500 times per second. NetEase Auto notes that the plug-in system and three motors add weight, and that the 215 km electric range is not class-leading, with winter range likely to drop.

The XT5 PHEV competes in the 250,000-300,000 yuan plug-in SUV segment against the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC L, as well as rising domestic brands. Its pitch is clear: standard lidar, Momenta driver assistance, Brembo brakes, preview suspension and all-wheel drive at a price that undercuts many rivals. The brand also offers a lifetime warranty on the battery, motor and electronic control system. However, Cadillac has less plug-in hybrid credibility in China than domestic leaders, and resale values remain unproven, according to the outlet.
