BYD is preparing to launch the second-generation Seagull, its entry-level battery-electric hatchback, with a raft of comfort and storage upgrades that push the small-car segment's equipment levels higher. The interior preview was posted on September 30 by Zhang Zhuo, general manager of BYD's Ocean network sales division, according to Chinese outlet D1EV.
Comfort and storage focus
The new Seagull's cabin centres on what BYD calls three pillars: comfort, intelligence and storage. Both front seats gain electric adjustment, and the driver's seat adds a massage function. The rear bench is designed for more legroom, and a multi-colour ambient lighting system wraps the cabin.
Storage is a headline feature. The front boot (frunk) offers 94 litres, an unusual figure for a car of this class, while the rear cargo area can expand to 1,380 litres with the seats folded. A hidden storage box under the second row provides extra space for small items.
On the tech side, the Seagull gets a digital instrument cluster with split-screen display, automatic climate control, and magnetic quick-access buttons on the centre console for what BYD calls a playful interaction experience.
Market context
The current-generation Seagull, sold as the 2026 model, is priced from 69,900 to 85,900 yuan (about $9,800 to $12,100) as a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives. It offers a CLTC range of 305 km to 405 km (a WLTP estimate would be roughly 260-340 km, as CLTC figures are typically 15-20% more optimistic). The car's 2,500 mm wheelbase remains unchanged in the current model.
The existing Seagull has been a strong seller, with 39,919 units delivered in May 2026, ranking first among sedans in China that month, according to D1EV. An optional lidar-equipped version is available at 90,900 to 97,900 yuan (about $12,800 to $13,800), which includes one year of urban NOA (city advanced driver assistance).
BYD has not yet announced pricing or a launch date for the second-generation model, but the interior reveal signals the company's intent to keep its cheapest EV competitive as rivals such as Geely and Wuling also push into the budget segment.
