BYD's refreshed Sea Lion 05, launched in April, is proving a strong sales driver, with the DM-i version passing 10,000 monthly sales in June and the EV version now steady at about 8,000 units a month, according to NetEase Auto. The two-year-old model has climbed to a sustained high sales plateau, a sign that the facelift hit the mark with buyers in China's compact SUV segment.
The upgraded Sea Lion 05 EV comes with BYD's second-generation Blade battery and flash-charging technology, a standard high-speed blowout stability control system, and an optional lidar-based DiPilot 300 advanced driver assistance package. It also features the DiLink 150 smart cockpit, a 15.6-inch central display, and the YunNian-C intelligent damping body control system. Official guide prices range from 97,900 to 145,900 yuan (about $13,800 to $20,500), a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives that undercuts many rivals in the A-segment SUV class.
Fast charging and long range
BYD says the flash-charging system can add meaningful range in about five minutes, roughly the time it takes to buy a coffee, reducing the need to wait at public charging stations. The EV's CLTC range rises to 630 km (about 391 miles), which translates to a WLTP estimate of roughly 505-535 km (est.) given that CLTC figures are typically 15-20% more optimistic than WLTP. The DM-i version, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), pairs a 1.5-litre dedicated hybrid engine with BYD's EHS electric hybrid system and a Blade battery, delivering 120 kW (161 hp) and 210 Nm of torque. Its CLTC electric-only range reaches up to 305 km (about 190 miles), with a combined range of 2,105 km (about 1,308 miles) on a full tank and charge, and NEDC fuel consumption of 3.1 litres per 100 km when the battery is depleted.
The lidar-equipped DiPilot 300 system adds city navigation assist (CNOA) and highway navigation assist (HNOA), plus traffic-light recognition with real-time countdown, negotiation at intersections, full-scenario obstacle avoidance and roundabout handling. BYD's large sales base gives it a data advantage for training end-to-end driver assistance models, the report notes. The optional ADAS package costs 9,900 yuan (about $1,400) on some trims.
Standard equipment push
The Sea Lion 05 also includes the YunNian-C damping system with anti-motion-sickness and intelligent comfort control, a rear-mounted rear-wheel-drive layout for the EV, front MacPherson and rear five-link suspension, iTAC 2.0 torque control, and a 4.7-metre turning radius. BYD lists more than 100 items of standard equipment, including cornering assist lights, the blowout stability system, a five-way dashcam, and E-Call emergency services. The blowout system works at speeds from 120 km/h to 140 km/h (75-87 mph), limiting lateral deviation to under 0.75 metres in the event of a tyre failure.
NetEase Auto recommends the 540 Zhihang version at 129,900 yuan (about $18,300) as the best balance of range, ADAS and price, with the 540 Linghang version at 119,900 yuan (about $16,900) for budget buyers. For those with frequent long-distance needs or poor charging access, the DM-i version starts with 220 km of electric-only range. The Sea Lion 05 is positioned as a family-oriented model in BYD's Ocean series, and with the traditional September-October sales season underway, the report expects further volume gains.
