BYD recalls 183,211 Tang and Qin models over brake pedal defect

BYD is recalling 183,211 Tang and Qin series vehicles in China to replace a brake pedal limiter pad that may crack and cause brake lights to stay on, posing a safety risk.

BYD has filed a recall plan with China's State Administration for Market Regulation covering 183,211 Tang and Qin series vehicles produced between 2014 and 2022, according to Chinese automotive outlet Gasgoo, as republished by D1EV.

The recall is split between two BYD entities. BYD Auto Industry will recall 58,026 Tang series vehicles built from March 28, 2015 to December 21, 2018, 77,846 new-generation Tang DM series vehicles produced from May 19, 2018 to January 14, 2022, and 7,023 new-generation Tang EV series vehicles made from December 27, 2018 to October 25, 2021. BYD Auto will recall 40,316 Qin series vehicles manufactured from June 27, 2014 to June 9, 2019.

The recall stems from a production issue affecting the brake pedal limiter pad material. According to BYD's filing, a batch of limiter pads was manufactured with abnormal material properties. After extended use, the pad may crack or break, and in extreme cases detach, causing the brake lights to stay on even when the pedal is not depressed. That sends a false signal to vehicles behind and creates a safety hazard.

Free replacement at authorized dealers

To eliminate the risk, BYD Auto Industry and BYD Auto will instruct authorized dealers to replace the limiter pads on affected vehicles free of charge. Vehicles that have already received an improved pad in a previous service visit do not need a second replacement, the company said.

Owners will be notified by registered mail, phone or text message. The recall covers models from the Tang and Qin families, which include plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery-electric (BEV) variants produced over an eight-year span.

The move is the latest in a series of recalls by Chinese automakers as regulators tighten oversight of vehicle safety. BYD, which sold more than 3 million new-energy vehicles in 2024, has not disclosed the cost of the recall. The company said it would work with dealers to complete the replacements as quickly as possible.

Gasgoo reported the recall plan after it was filed with the regulator, noting that the affected vehicles were manufactured across BYD's production lines during the specified periods. Owners can check whether their vehicle is affected through BYD's official channels or by contacting their local dealer.
