BMW has marked a production milestone and confirmed the next chapter of its M performance line: the one-millionth M car rolled off the line at its Munich plant, and that same factory is set to build the brand's first battery-electric M3, according to Chinese auto outlet PCauto.
The milestone vehicle is an M3 finished in a custom BMW Individual shade called Fire Orange III. The Munich facility, which has been the home of M models for decades, will now also serve as the production base for the electric M3, with the model expected to be officially unveiled in 2027 and first deliveries possible before the end of that year.
Quad-motor platform under the camouflage
Camouflaged prototype images released by BMW show the electric M3 retains the M family's signature yellow headlights, now paired with square light units in the lower bumper. The hood is raised with ventilation openings, designed to channel cooling for the electric drive system. The front-end styling is more restrained than the earlier concept, PCauto notes.
Side view reveals flush door handles and pronounced wheel arches that give the car a muscular stance, sitting on large multi-spoke performance wheels. At the rear, slim split taillights flank square track-style lamps, with a large diffuser under the bumper to improve aerodynamics.
Under the camouflage sits a quad-motor architecture based on BMW's Neue Klasse platform. The final output has not been officially announced, but reports suggest some versions could exceed 1,000 horsepower (about 746 kW), PCauto said.
Timeline and positioning
The electric M3 is scheduled for a 2027 launch, with production starting at the Munich plant in the same year. BMW has not yet confirmed delivery timing, but initial customer cars could arrive before the end of 2027.
The move underscores BMW's push to electrify its high-performance lineup while keeping M models built at the traditional Munich site. The Neue Klasse platform is central to BMW's next-generation EV strategy, and the electric M3 will be its most performance-focused application to date.
PCauto reported the details from the Munich plant event, noting that the one-millionth M car's special paint job highlights BMW's continued emphasis on customization for M buyers. No pricing or full specifications have been released for the electric M3 yet.
