BMW has disclosed its product roadmap for China, outlining a wave of new models through 2027 as part of its Capital Markets Day presentation, according to PCauto. The timeline shows the automaker will introduce a long-wheelbase iX3 in the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by a long-wheelbase i3, a new 7 Series and i7, and an all-new X5 and iX5 in the first quarter of 2027.
Localization and export plans
Between the second and fourth quarters of 2027, BMW plans to launch four more models, though specifics were not disclosed. The company also hinted at five mystery vehicles for 2028. Notably, BMW aims to have 95% of its vehicles sold in China locally produced by the end of 2029, and it will begin exporting from China to Southeast Asia. This suggests that long-wheelbase versions, traditionally exclusive to the Chinese market, could become part of a global product strategy.
The roadmap underscores BMW's commitment to the world's largest auto market, where it has been expanding its electric vehicle lineup. The long-wheelbase iX3 and i3 are expected to compete in the premium BEV (battery-electric) segment, while the new X5 and iX5 will target the luxury SUV market.
BMW's increased localization is part of a broader trend among foreign automakers to deepen their manufacturing footprint in China, leveraging the country's supply chain and growing demand for NEVs (new energy vehicles, including BEVs, PHEVs, and EREVs). The move to export from China to Southeast Asia also reflects China's rising role as an export hub for global automakers.
While specific specifications and pricing for the upcoming models have not been announced, the roadmap signals BMW's aggressive push to maintain its competitive edge against domestic rivals like BYD and Nio, as well as other foreign brands. The company's focus on long-wheelbase variants highlights the importance of rear-seat comfort for Chinese consumers, a key differentiator in the premium segment.
As BMW gears up for a busy 2027, the industry will be watching how these new models perform in a market increasingly dominated by electric vehicles. With the Chinese government's supportive policies for NEVs and the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure, BMW's electrified lineup is well-positioned to capture a larger share of the premium EV market.
