BAIC's new boxy five-seat SUV, the Xingtan 5X, will arrive at dealerships before China's National Day holiday and open pre-sales in mid-October, according to Gasgoo, a Chinese automotive news outlet. The model is the first in BAIC's new 'Xingtan' new-energy lineup and is positioned as a global vehicle, with plans for sale in overseas markets.
The Xingtan 5X targets buyers who need a spacious SUV for weekday commutes and weekend outdoor trips. It competes with urban light-off-road and new-energy 'boxy' models, differentiating itself with space, features, and its squared-off design. The vehicle measures 4,865 mm long, 2,000 mm wide, and 1,910 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,875 mm; including the rear-mounted spare tire, the length extends to 5,005 mm.
Interior and tech
Inside, the SUV features dual 15.6-inch 2.5K central displays powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, a 23-speaker audio system co-tuned with the National Centre for the Performing Arts, and a dual-opening compressor refrigerator that can hold temperatures from -6°C to 50°C. The cabin offers a claimed 'space efficiency' of about 88.6 percent, and with the front seats folded flat, it creates a 1.75-meter-long level area.
For driver assistance, the Xingtan 5X uses Huawei's ADS 5 Pro system with a lidar unit mounted inside the cabin to reduce exposure to mud and debris. It also includes millimeter-wave radar, high-definition cameras, and ultrasonic sensors. The system supports features such as 120-meter reverse tracking. The body is built with a high-strength steel cage using laser-tailored welding, and it offers IP68-rated protection, allowing submersion in 1.5 meters of water for two hours.
Powertrain and pricing
Two powertrain options are offered: a battery-electric version with an 81.9 kWh battery providing a 625 km range, and a plug-in hybrid version with a 50.4 kWh battery offering 310 km of electric-only range. The vehicle supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) external power discharge. Off-road credentials include a 25-degree approach angle, 28-degree departure angle, 228 mm of ground clearance, and 600 mm wading depth. There are 15 driving modes and physical controls on the roof.
According to Gasgoo, the version equipped with Huawei's Qiankun ADAS will have a starting price of about 170,000 yuan (approximately $23,900, Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives). Following industry pricing patterns, the final launch price could be about 10,000 yuan (about $1,400) lower, though BAIC has not confirmed this.
