Audi S5 Avant launches in China at 571,800 yuan with hybrid V6 and RS differential

Audi has launched the new S5 Avant in China at 571,800 yuan (about $80,500), combining a 3.0T V6 with a mild-hybrid system and RS-level rear differential in a wagon body.

Audi has launched the new S5 Avant in China, priced at 571,800 yuan (about $80,500) as a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives. The model is the first Audi S-badged vehicle built on the PPC luxury combustion platform and marks the brand's current S-family wagon offering in the country, according to NetEase Auto.

Hybrid V6 with racing tech

The S5 Avant is powered by an upgraded EA839 evo 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 270 kW (362 hp) and 550 Nm of torque, with a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. The engine uses variable turbine geometry (VTG) technology derived from Le Mans racing, which adjusts exhaust flow to improve low-speed response while maintaining high-rpm output.

Notably, the powertrain adds a P0+P3 dual-motor hybrid system. The P3 motor contributes 18 kW (24 hp) and 230 Nm, assisting drive at speeds up to 140 km/h. It allows brief electric-only running at low speeds and provides extra torque during acceleration, while regenerative braking can recover up to 25 kW. A 1.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery helps the car achieve a combined fuel consumption of 7.68 L/100 km.

The hybrid system is not just about efficiency, Audi says. It improves low-speed throttle response and smoothness, bridging the gap between performance and everyday usability.

Wagon practicality with sporty handling

The S5 Avant comes with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive, which can predict traction needs 0.5 seconds ahead and distribute torque between axles. An RS-level rear sport differential actively shifts torque between the rear wheels during cornering to reduce understeer.

The car rides on S-specific sport suspension with a five-link setup, lowering the body by 20 mm and using forged aluminum components to cut unsprung mass. Progressive steering lightens effort at low speeds and reduces sensitivity to small steering inputs at high speeds.

Wagon practicality is a key selling point. The S5 Avant measures 4,835 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,450 mm tall, with a 2,896 mm wheelbase. Trunk capacity ranges from 448 liters to over 1,396 liters with the rear seats folded. The cabin includes 24 storage compartments, a roof rack and a powered tailgate with hands-free opening.

Inside, the S5 Avant features an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit, a 14.5-inch MMI touchscreen and a 10.9-inch passenger display with an active privacy mode that reduces driver distraction when playing video. Nappa leather sport seats offer ventilation, heating and massage, while a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system with 685-watt amplifier is standard. Driver assistance includes front and rear emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, a 360-degree camera and automated parking with remote control.

The S5 Avant is not just about straight-line speed, Audi emphasizes. By combining the S performance package with Avant practicality, it aims to deliver driving enjoyment and daily usability in a single car, appealing to buyers who value mechanical performance but need wagon versatility. A limited launch edition of 99 units adds exclusive magnetic gray paint and 20-inch Audi Sport wheels.
