Xpeng unveils MONA L05, a large five-seat SUV for young families

Xpeng has officially announced the upcoming MONA L05, a large five-seat SUV positioned as the first such model for young buyers. The new car will be offered in both battery-electric and range-extender versions, with CLTC ranges up to 660 km.

Xpeng has officially confirmed that its MONA L05, a large five-seat SUV aimed at young families, is on the way. The announcement came on October 12, according to Chinese automotive outlet Gasgoo (盖世汽车), which cited information from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The L05 is the third model in Xpeng's MONA series, following the M03 sedan and the M05, and marks the series' first foray into range-extender (EREV) powertrains.

Design and dimensions

The MONA L05 features a coupe-like SUV silhouette with a closed front face and T-shaped headlights, continuing the MONA family design language. It measures 4,870 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,636 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,940 mm—50 mm longer than the Xpeng G6. The five-seat layout targets buyers who want more space without moving up to a larger, more expensive model.

Powertrain options

Two powertrain choices are available. The battery-electric version uses a single motor producing 183 kW (about 245 hp), paired with a 71.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. CLTC range figures are 615 km, 635 km, 640 km, and 660 km, depending on configuration. (CLTC is roughly 15–20% more optimistic than WLTP, so expect real-world ranges around 520–560 km est.)

The range-extender version combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine (70 kW) with the same 183 kW drive motor and a 37.2 kWh battery pack. It offers pure-electric CLTC ranges of 237 km, 245 km, or 253 km, with the engine acting as a generator to extend total range.

The L05 is expected to be priced competitively in China, though no official price has been announced. As a reference, the MONA M03 starts at 119,800 yuan (about $16,900) before taxes and incentives.

Market context

The MONA series has been a sales pillar for Xpeng. The M03, launched in August 2024, sold 175,300 units in 2025, accounting for 40% of Xpeng's total deliveries. With the L05, Xpeng is broadening the MONA lineup from its youthful roots to appeal to mainstream family buyers, a segment where competition is intense.

The L05 was listed in the 407th batch of MIIT's vehicle catalog on May 9, 2026, indicating that production is imminent. Xpeng has not yet announced a launch date or pricing, but the model is expected to hit the Chinese market in the coming months.
