Xpeng launches G9L flagship SUV from 231,800 yuan, targets global top three

Xpeng's new five-seat flagship SUV G9L launched in China on September 17, priced from 231,800 yuan (about $32,700). The company says the model is a global vehicle, with deliveries starting after its Paris Motor Show debut on October 12.

Xpeng has launched the G9L, a five-seat flagship SUV that the company says is designed from the ground up as a global vehicle, with a starting price of 231,800 yuan (about $32,700) before taxes and incentives. The model, unveiled on September 17, is positioned as a companion to the six-seat GX, sharing the same platform but with a body tuned for driving dynamics and space.

According to Sina Auto, Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng and product matrix general manager Wu Anfei discussed the G9L's development and strategy in a post-launch interview. The G9L took more than three years to develop, with testing across 26 countries and 6.74 million kilometres (4.19 million miles) of validation, including extreme hot and cold conditions.

Global ambitions and powertrain options

The G9L is offered in both BEV (battery-electric) and EREV (range-extender) versions, a decision Wu said reflects varying charging infrastructure in different markets. The model is built for both left- and right-hand drive, and will go on sale globally starting with a debut at the Paris Motor Show on October 12, with deliveries beginning after that.

He said the company aims for the G9L to be among the top three in its global large-SUV segment. He also said he hopes Xpeng products will eventually reach the U.S. market, though no timeline was given.

Positioning and competition

Wu said the G9L targets urban family buyers and owners replacing premium cars. He highlighted the vehicle's space, safety standards, and advanced driver assistance as key strengths. The G9L features Xpeng's second-generation VLA (vision-language-action) system, which is currently being tested in Europe and will be rolled out once regulatory approvals are complete.

He also noted that the G9 has already been a sales leader in its segment in several European countries, including Germany, giving the company confidence in competing with established luxury brands. The G9L offers configurations that European rivals typically charge extra for or do not offer at all, Wu said.

Regarding the vehicle's name, Wu explained that the G9L is not a stretched G9 but a distinct model. The name was chosen because the GX's "X" is understood as the number 10 in some markets, and the G9L is larger than the G9. The company considered simply converting the six-seat GX to five seats but chose to design a new body to preserve driving dynamics and achieve a golden-ratio proportion of 0.605.

On supply chain sharing, Wu said the lower body shares more than 90% of its architecture with the GX, while the upper body is unique. Software, models, computing power, and hardware are largely shared, with some adaptation.

He Xiaopeng said the G9L's pricing is aggressive, with more than 100 features typically found in 500,000-yuan-class luxury cars, but at a price point in the 250,000-300,000 yuan range. He said the car is designed for drivers who want a fun-to-drive vehicle with strong smart-driving capabilities that they can also use to carry family and friends.
