Xpeng G9L SUV to launch on September 17 with EREV and BEV options

Xpeng's G9L flagship SUV will hit the Chinese market on September 17, offering both EREV and BEV powertrains, 800V fast charging, and a starting pre-sale price of 259,800 yuan.

Xpeng has confirmed that its G9L flagship SUV will launch in China on September 17, according to a report from Gasgoo. The model, which opened pre-sales at 259,800 yuan (about $36,600), is the first vehicle under Xpeng's 'dual-flagship' strategy to feature a new-generation VLA (Vision-Language-Action) autonomous driving model.

The upgraded ADAS system promises faster perception response, improved time-series prediction, and better human-machine interaction, with some L4-level features trickling down to enhance the driving experience. The G9L is positioned as a 'golden large five-seat' tech flagship SUV, focusing on spacious rear seating and cargo capacity.

Dual powertrain strategy

The G9L will be offered with both battery-electric (BEV) and range-extender (EREV) powertrains, all equipped with an 800V high-voltage fast-charging platform. This dual approach aims to balance long-distance range with efficient charging, addressing a key concern for EV buyers in China. The vehicle's 3,100mm wheelbase underscores its large five-seat layout, while standard features include rear-wheel steering and air suspension for improved handling and ride comfort.

Xpeng has not yet disclosed the full specification list or final pricing for each trim, but the company says these details will be announced at the launch event. The G9L fills a gap in Xpeng's lineup by adding an EREV option to its flagship SUV, putting it in direct competition with other plug-in hybrid and range-extender models in the segment.

Market context

The launch comes as Chinese automakers increasingly adopt EREV technology to address range anxiety and appeal to buyers who want EV benefits without charging infrastructure concerns. Xpeng's move follows similar strategies by Li Auto and other rivals in the premium SUV space. The G9L's pre-sale price of 259,800 yuan (about $36,600) positions it competitively against models like the Li L8 and Nio ES6, though final pricing could shift at launch.

Industry watchers will be watching the official pricing and early market response to gauge demand for Xpeng's expanded portfolio. The company has been working to strengthen its product lineup and technology leadership, with the G9L expected to play a key role in its sales momentum for the remainder of 2025.
