GWM's premium Wei brand has opened pre-sales for the Gaoshan 8 HEV, a large MPV that combines a non-plug-in hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive and a LiDAR-equipped driver assistance system. The model starts at 275,800 yuan (about $38,800) as a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives, according to NetEase Auto. Deliveries are expected in the fourth quarter.
Hybrid MPV with a twist
The Gaoshan 8 HEV is positioned as a 'blue-plate' MPV, meaning it runs on a conventional hybrid setup that does not require external charging, appealing to buyers who want fuel efficiency without the need for a charging routine. It uses a 2.0T hybrid-specific engine paired with front and rear electric motors in GWM's Hi4 all-wheel-drive system, producing a combined 322 kW (about 431 hp) and 782 Nm of torque. The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and has a top speed of 190 km/h. The WLTC combined fuel consumption is rated at 6.92 L/100 km.
The body measures 5,280 mm long, 1,960 mm wide and 1,900 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,145 mm, placing it firmly in the large MPV segment. The design follows the Wei family's 'mountain and river' styling, featuring a full-width grille and wraparound lighting, with seven paint options including a two-tone lacquer green finish.
LiDAR and luxury as standard
A standout feature is the standard Coffee Pilot 3 driver assistance system, which includes a 192-line LiDAR and 27 high-precision sensors, powered by an Orin-Y chip with 200 TOPS of computing power. The system supports parking-space-to-parking-space assisted driving, a rare offering in a non-plug-in MPV, according to NetEase Auto.
Inside, the Gaoshan 8 HEV retains the family's flat floor and dual-track sliding rails for the second and third rows, allowing flexible seat positioning. Front seats are upholstered in Nappa leather with 10-point massage, ventilation and heating, while the driver gets headrest speakers. The center console adds physical buttons, dual 50W wireless charging pads and extra storage. Full interior details are pending, but the cabin is expected to include dual 15.6-inch displays and a rear entertainment screen, based on the Gaoshan 8 Smart Edition.
Pre-sale customers receive lifetime warranty on the three-electric system (battery, motor and controller), a 6-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty, and free basic maintenance. The model uses a 3.64 kWh ternary lithium battery and an all-aluminum suspension to reduce unsprung mass for better ride comfort.
The Gaoshan 8 HEV targets buyers who want the convenience of a non-plug-in hybrid, the traction of all-wheel drive, and advanced driver assistance, filling a gap in the market for a large MPV with these features at this price point.
