SAIC Volkswagen has launched the ID.ERA 8X, the third model in its ID.ERA family, in China. The five-seat range-extender SUV (EREV) carries an official guide price of 226,800 to 289,800 yuan (about $31,900 to $40,800), with a limited-time promotional price of 206,800 to 269,800 yuan ($29,100 to $38,000), according to NetEase Auto. The model is positioned as a "German-style driving flagship" and comes in four trims: Pro, Max, Max Long Range, and Ultra Long Range.
The 8X is the more urban-oriented of the family's two flagship models, complementing the six-seat 9X. The company also announced that a new member, the ID.ERA 5X, will go on sale in November, completing a "985" lineup of four product lines.
Standard smart driving hardware
A key selling point is the standard fitment of Momenta's R7 world model across all trims. The system uses a 192-line lidar and 26 perception sensors as standard equipment, not reserved for top trims. The R7 model shifts from recognizing objects to understanding the physical world, including attributes, causality, and interactions, per NetEase Auto.
The 8X also debuts door-to-door (D2D) navigation-assisted driving, which handles parking lot exits, toll booths, city roads, highways, and automatic parking at the destination without driver intervention. This means the assisted driving system works from garage to garage, not just on elevated roads.
Powertrain and range
The EREV uses an EA211 1.5T range extender, which has undergone 15 years of development and three generations of upgrades, with over 25 million units installed globally. It achieves a maximum thermal efficiency of 43%, runs on 92-octane gasoline, and has a depleted-battery fuel consumption of 5.85 liters per 100 km. The Pro trim packs a 51.1kWh battery, delivering a CLTC electric-only range of 373km for rear-wheel drive and 340km for all-wheel drive. The Max Long Range and above use a 65.2kWh CATL battery, offering 451km CLTC electric range and a combined range of 1,602km on a full tank and charge. As a rough estimate, the 451km CLTC figure translates to roughly 360-385km under WLTP testing, which is typically 15-20% more conservative.
All trims come with an 800V electrical architecture, enabling a 10-80% fast charge in 16 to 19 minutes. The all-wheel-drive version accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds.
The chassis features double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension across the range. Max and above trims add dual-chamber air suspension with continuously variable damping, plus an intelligent preview system that scans the road 15 meters ahead and self-leveling. In summer testing in Xinjiang, the vehicle recovered stability in 1.202 seconds after crossing a wavy road at 80km/h.
With the 8X, SAIC Volkswagen is pairing its chassis expertise and proven range extender with the smart driving and feature density typically found in new EV startups. The model's standard smart driving, full equipment at entry level, and air suspension and refrigerator not limited to top trims could pressure rivals in the 250,000-yuan five-seat segment, NetEase Auto noted.
