Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Tops Universal's All-Time Global Box Office with $1.563 Billion

Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' has become Universal Pictures' highest-grossing film worldwide, surpassing $1.563 billion at the global box office, according to IThome.

Universal Pictures announced on September 13 that Christopher Nolan's epic 'The Odyssey' has claimed the title of the studio's highest-grossing film in global box office history. The film has surpassed $1.563 billion worldwide (approximately 10.52 billion yuan), according to Chinese tech news outlet IThome.

The movie, an adaptation of Homer's epic poem, follows Odysseus's long journey home after the Trojan War. It has already secured the box office crown in Italy and France for 2026, and also set a record as the highest-grossing imported historical film in China's cinematic history.

Digital Release and IMAX Milestone

'The Odyssey' will arrive on digital platforms on November 17, with simultaneous availability on streaming services and a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray release. The film was shot entirely with IMAX film cameras, making it the first feature film in history to be filmed completely in this format.

The star-studded cast includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, and Samantha Morton.

According to IThome, the film's box office success underscores the enduring appeal of epic storytelling and the continued relevance of theatrical releases in a streaming-dominated era. The digital release is expected to extend the film's commercial run, with home entertainment formats offering fans a chance to experience the IMAX-shot visuals in their own living rooms.
