Nio's sub-brand firefly has reached a milestone of 90,000 deliveries of its small electric hatchback, according to Chinese outlet NetEase Auto. The model, which went on sale in China last year, is positioned as an urban commuter car that combines distinctive styling with a low entry price—especially when buyers choose the battery-swap option.
The firefly EV is available for 119,800 yuan (about $16,900) as a Chinese guide price before taxes and incentives, but the battery-swap version drops to 79,800 yuan (about $11,200). The lower price works because the battery is leased separately, a model Nio has championed across its lineup. The car is built on Nio's ecosystem, which includes a growing network of battery-swap stations.
Design and practicality
The firefly stands out with its "triple-beam" headlights—three stacked light rings that the company says symbolize "three lives creating all things." The exterior is full of capsule shapes and diagonal lines, and it rides on new two-tone star-track alloy wheels. The rear features a two-tone bumper and a clamshell tailgate that blends into the taillight cut, helping aerodynamics.
Inside, the car has a 13.2-inch 2.5K central touchscreen and a 6-inch instrument cluster. The column-mounted gear selector frees up space in the front, and the open pass-through design lets both front occupants exit from either side. The front trunk is the largest in its class at 92 liters and has a drain, making it handy for wet gear like fishing equipment. The rear seats fold flat without removing headrests, opening up more than 1,253 liters of cargo space, and there's a 29-liter hidden compartment under the right rear seat.
Compared with the Geely Geometry E, a direct rival, the firefly offers more storage nooks and a more modern look, according to the report.
Specs and driver assistance
The firefly's single electric motor produces 120 kW (161 hp), and the standard version uses a 42.1 kWh battery pack that weighs 314 kg. The CLTC range is 420 km, which translates to roughly 340-360 km on the more realistic WLTP cycle (est.). The car's turning radius is just 4.7 meters, making it easy to maneuver in narrow alleys and parking lots. It also comes with full-scene automatic parking.
For driver assistance, the firefly packs 24 sensing components and a computer with 128 TOPS of computing power, enabling navigation-assisted driving on highways and urban expressways. That's a significant step up from the basic Level 2 assistance found in the Geometry E, the report notes.
NetEase Auto's review acknowledges the firefly's strengths—low entry price with battery swap, distinctive design, clever storage, and class-leading tech—but also points out that the total cost of ownership over time may be higher than a conventional purchase, and the small footprint may feel cramped for long trips with multiple passengers. Still, for city commuters who value easy parking and smart features, the firefly is a compelling option.
