Nio's flagship electric SUV, the ES8, sold 10,539 units in September, retaining its position as the best-selling model in China's 400,000-yuan (about $56,300) vehicle segment for the second consecutive month, according to Gasgoo, citing Nio founder William Li. The company's larger ES9 also continued its strong run, topping the 500,000-yuan (about $70,400) battery-electric SUV market for the fourth month in a row.
The figures underscore Nio's growing grip on China's premium large-SUV niche, one of the few passenger-car segments still expanding. Rising demand from families needing space for multiple occupants is creating room for large, high-end battery-electric SUVs, Gasgoo reported.
Why the ES8 is winning buyers
The new ES8 leverages Nio's battery-swap network, chassis technology, and advanced driver-assistance systems to stand out in the 400,000-yuan price band. That combination is helping it divert orders from traditional luxury combustion-engine SUVs, according to the report. Battery swap — a service that lets drivers exchange a depleted pack for a charged one in minutes — is a key differentiator for Nio in China.
The ES9, positioned as the brand's flagship executive SUV, has maintained steady retail performance. Independent test data cited by Gasgoo shows the model has earned recognition for cabin quietness and chassis dynamics, appealing to both high-end business users and families. The 500,000-yuan segment is relatively small, but the ES9's consistent orders support its monthly leadership.
Premium shift accelerates
Together, the two models anchor Nio's high-end SUV lineup at the 400,000 and 500,000 yuan price points. Data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) cited in the report shows the premium combustion-engine market is under pressure, while affluent buyers are increasingly switching to battery-electric vehicles. Domestic high-end BEVs are steadily chipping away at the share of traditional luxury brands.
The ES8 is a mid-to-large premium BEV, while the ES9 is a flagship executive SUV. Their differentiated positioning lets Nio cover a range of budgets in the upper end of the market, Gasgoo noted.
