Mercedes-AMG has taken the wraps off its first fully electric full-size SUV, the AMG GT SUV, a model that leans on tri-motor power and record charging speeds rather than just acceleration figures. The new SUV, built on the AMG.EA platform, marks the performance brand's first ground-up full-size SUV in its 59-year history, according to Chinese outlet D1EV.
Power and performance
The range-topping AMG GT 63 packs three axial-flux electric motors producing a combined 860 kW (about 1,169 hp), with a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds (using a 1-foot rollout) and 0-200 km/h in 6.8 seconds. The mid-range GT 55 also uses three motors, delivering 600 kW (about 816 hp), while the entry-level GT 53 runs a dual-motor setup with 400 kW (about 544 hp).
AMG emphasizes sustained output as much as peak numbers: the GT 63 can hold 530 kW (about 721 hp) continuously, roughly 60% of its peak. This durability was hinted at last year when the Concept AMG GT XX covered 5,479 km in 24 hours at an average speed near 300 km/h, stopping only for fast charges at an average power of about 850 kW.
Charging and range
The GT SUV rides on an 800V electrical architecture. Two battery options are offered: a 106 kWh pack that supports up to 600 kW charging, adding about 380 km of WLTP range in 10 minutes, and a 128 kWh pack that raises peak charging to 710 kW, adding roughly 454 km in the same time and taking about 12 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. WLTP range is rated up to 700 km for the most efficient version.
AMG has also equipped the SUV with active suspension (standard on the GT 63, optional on the GT 55) that uses hydraulic elements to control pitch and roll, plus rear-wheel steering with up to 6 degrees of angle. Below 80 km/h, the rear wheels turn opposite to the front to reduce the turning circle; above that speed, they turn in the same direction for stability.
The exterior adopts Mercedes' latest design language, with a low, wide stance and a coupe-like silhouette that measures 5,084 mm long, 2,001 mm wide, and 1,656 mm tall on a 3,040 mm wheelbase. Six round tail-lights with turbine-like styling and an active rear spoiler on GT 55 and GT 63 complete the look.
Pricing for the AMG GT SUV has not been announced. The model is expected to compete with other high-performance electric SUVs in the luxury segment.
